Developing a Heart for Graduate School Evangelism : Developing a Heart for Graduate School Evangelism GCF large group 8-3-06 John 3:16: John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 2 Corinthians 5:17-20: 2 Corinthians 5:17-20 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. Evangelism from God’s perspective: Evangelism from God’s perspective Jesus was God’s answer to human brokenness God’s heart is for the lost God’s heart is our heart if Christ lives in us God has given us the ministry of reconciliation Therefore, if we are in Christ, we are called, equipped and empowered to bring the lost to Christ The Great Commission: The Great Commission Matthew 28:18-20 (New International Version) Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.' How effective are we at reaching lost graduate students?: How effective are we at reaching lost graduate students? How many Christians are in your graduate student cohort? How many have become Christians in graduate school? How many came from Christian homes? How do we outreach to graduate students?: How do we outreach to graduate students? Challenges Academic pride Cynical outlooks Hardened hearts Lack of community Hatred of Bush (and by extension, his faith) Lack of social skills Kingdom Mindset: Kingdom Mindset God longs to move in our lives in this area God wants successful evangelism even more than we do So when we move in evangelism we are moving in accord with God’s will and He loves to demonstrate His sovereignty, love, power, and existence to the lost! Luke 10:1-11: Luke 10:1-11 Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-two 1After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. Luke 10:1-11: Luke 10:1-11 Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-two 5'When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.' 6 If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. 8'When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God is near you.' 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 'Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God is near.' Jesus’s Model of Evangelism: Jesus’s Model of Evangelism Pray for workers (set your cellphone alarms!) Get sent out (ask God to show you which village to minister to!) Find a person of peace (and if there is no such person, leave!) Minister to that person, but you reach the whole village What is a person of peace?: What is a person of peace? Someone of reputation, either good or bad, who is open to the gospel Samaritan woman The demon-possessed man at the tombs Generally well-connected in a community The goal of outreach ought to be to find people of peace! When they come to Christ they can bring a whole social network with them The goal: each people group ('village') that comes to Christ becomes a missional community: an on-site witness of the love of God Each community in turn sends more workers and thereby multiplies A self-sustaining movement of the Kingdom of Heaven spreads A caution: A caution This isn’t a formula for success! None of this will work unless we are Abiding in Christ specifically led by the Holy Spirit Abiding: Abiding John 15:1-8 (New International Version) 1'I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5'I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. Practical Steps: Practical Steps Abiding Clear out your schedule—and spend substantial time with God in prayer each day. Ask God to help you love Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength As we love God, our hearts are broken by the things that break God’s heart As you hear His heart, begin (or continue) to cry out for the salvation of the lost in your life Learn to hear the voice of God and His leading DON’T just jump into ministry! Holy Spirit Ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit and guide you in ministry Stories: Stories Bagels N’ coffee Prophetic dreams Spiritual discussions The details will be different every time—that’s why we need the leading of the Spirit!
