Between 1991 and 2004, ten countries and areas — Cambodia, China, French Polynesia, Fiji, Malaysia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Singapore and Viet Nam — accounted for 98.4% of all dengue cases and 99.7% of all deaths in the Western Pacific Region. About 40% of the world's population, or about 2.5 billion people, are at risk throughout the tropics and subtropics. Over 50 million dengue infections, including about 400 000 cases of dengue haemorrhagic fever, are estimated to occur annually. WHO alarmed about the spread of dengue :  9 WHO alarmed about the spread of dengue Manila, 23 July 2007 -- The WHO has warned that the Western Pacific Region may be heading for a major dengue outbreak unless concerted effort and cooperation are undertaken quickly. The major obstacles to preventing dengue epidemics in the Region effectively are low preparedness, inadequate surveillance, lack of funding and poor data. (WPRO) Project Objectives:  10 Project Objectives Improve skills and knowledge among participants about the practice of vector control, risk communication and community mobilization. Build the networking, capacities of and the cooperation among APEC member economies by sharing the application of information technologies in surveillance and improve data quality of dengue control. Project Output:  18 Project Output A report including workshop training materials, assessment, recommendations and their policy implications in APEC economies will be developed. All workshop documents will be accessible on internet and in CD-Rom. Targets Beneficiaries (1/2):  19 Targets Beneficiaries (1/2) Directly benefit to health workers, policy makers and community leaders of the workshop participants. Vulnerable people among member economies will be indirectly benefited if the participating economies can apply what they learned in the workshop. Targets Beneficiaries (2/2):  20 Targets Beneficiaries (2/2) The project will help to reduce the social and economic damage caused by dengue fever. The people living in the dengue-affected areas are expected to eventually suffer less from dengue virus infection. Budget:  21 Budget Total cost of proposal : US$ 78,620 APEC funding : US $43,600 Airfare for travel-eligible economies: $30,800 Per diem for travel-eligible economies : $12,800 Chinese Taipei financing US$: 35,020 Airfare for speakers: $12,800 Per diem for speakers : $5,400 Direct labors : $4,820 Workshop cost : $12,000 Project Directly Responses to the Priority of APEC :  22 Mr. Trang Tuan Tran, Ambassador to APEC The Organization supports networking approach in the prevention and control of dengue and promotes higher levels of cooperation amongst countries in Asia and Pacific Region. The 2007 Sydney Leaders’ Declaration Leaders agreed on “the need to further strengthen APEC’s efforts to build community resilience and preparedness for emergencies and natural disasters. “ The Priorities of the APEC HTF Work Plan To improve health outcomes through advances in health information technology. Virological surveillance, diagnosis, and molecular epidemiology of dengue conference and workshop in 2005 :  25 Virological surveillance, diagnosis, and molecular epidemiology of dengue conference and workshop in 2005 Funding: Chinese Taipei Co-sponsored by: Brunei Darussalam, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam Participants: 9 economies, including Canada, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, USA, Vietnam, Chinese Taipei and non-APEC economy. Householders are advised to remove potential habitats (e.g. flower pot plates, roof gutters, ground depressions) Background 2007/1/1 - 11/25  Disease prevention teams:  28 Disease prevention teams They will Put the regular vector breeding source inspection operation mechanism into practice by vacating empty houses, places and other potential vector breeding sources and by keeping a record of these places For future inspection.
