Client/server network evolved from the Andrew File System developed at Carnegie Mellon University in 1984. Provides a campus-wide file system to allow users to access their files from any computer on campus. When you login to a microlab PC with your MSUNetID and password, the computer is automatically connected to AFS, allowing access to the same files from any PC on campus. AFS Space Security:  AFS Space Security Anyone with access to the AFS root directory can read files in the “public” folder in your personal AFS space. Any web browser can read web files in the “web” folder in your personal AFS space. All other folders and files are locked so that only YOU can read and edit them. Any files saved in any folder in your AFS space count against your disk quota. The AFS “Web” Folder:  The AFS “Web” Folder All web documents (HTML files, images, scripts, sounds, movies, etc.) must be stored within this folder to be accessible through the Internet. Suggestion: Keep the number of folders in the web folder low. How to View your Web Space:  How to View your Web Space Your URL on MSU’s AFS space is: http://www.msu.edu/user/MSU NetID The default page is index.html Moving Files to your Web Space:  Moving Files to your Web Space Map a drive in Windows Explorer and drag-and-drop files to/from this drive. Use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software to move files to/from a remote location and your local PC. Windows Explorer - Microlab:  Windows Explorer - Microlab When you login to a microlab PC with your Pilot ID, the login process automatically maps the P:\ drive to your personal AFS space. When working in the microlab, moving a file to your web space is as easy as saving it (or copying it) to P:\web\ Be sure to have an “index.html” file Windows Explorer – On Campus:  Windows Explorer – On Campus Right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop Select Map Network Drive from the pop-up menu Type \\afs\MSUNetID in the Path box Click the OK button Enter your MSUNetID password when prompted and click the OK button NT Workstation machines require editing of the registry.
