From September 1, all new cars in the UK will be fitted with the new 63-prefixed number plate. In anticipation of this, Motor Search has rounded up what we think are the best new cars coming this autumn. Whether you’re on a tight budget, want a new family car or are after something slightly more extravagant, there’s sure to be a car here for you. This all-new model builds on that success. It’s got the same all-aluminium chassis as the ‘proper’ Range Rover and the same mix of petrol and diesel engines allied to an excellent eight-speed automatic gearbox. It’s almost 500kg lighter than the outgoing model and it shows, being considerably more efficient and cleaner while also being quicker and better through the bends. It’s not quite as good to drive on-road as the Porsche Cayenne, but it should better the Porsche off it. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk Renault Capture 7/21/2014 4 Small 4×4s, or crossovers, as they’re also known, are all the rage at the moment. The niche, popularised by Nissan with its Juke, is booming and plenty of carmakers have tried to muscle in on the Nissan’s success. For us, the Renault Captur is the best attempt so far, eclipsing rivals such as the Vauxhall Mokka and Peugeot 2008 by combining stylish design with that lofty driving position, exemplary economy and small-car like dynamics. If you’re after a supermini, but with more space and style, then this could be the car for you. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk Mercedes S-Class 7/21/2014 5 The self-styled ‘best car in the world’ has, according to Mercedes, got even better with this newest version of its legendary luxury saloon. Not only will this car be available in standard and long wheelbase form but, eventually, there will be super luxury ‘Pullman’ versions to compete with the Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. For now, however, the S350 CDI BlueTec makes an awful lot of sense if you are in the market for a luxury saloon. It’s refined, surprisingly economical and hugely comfortable while at the same time being eminently capable in the bends and plenty fast enough. So, the best car in the world? Perhaps not, but it’s certainly the best luxury saloon currently on offer, when compared to its Jaguar XJ, BMW 7 Series and Audi A8 rivals. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk Dacia Logan 7/21/2014 6 From one end of the luxury scale to the other. The Logan is almost the exact antithesis of the super-luxurious S-Class – it’s unapologetically basic. Following on from Dacia’s success with the Sandero supermini and the Duster 4×4, the Logan is what the company calls an ‘MCV’ (Maximum Capacity Vehicle, or estate to you and me) and it’s certainly large, with up to 1,518 litres of bootspace available, which puts it almost on a par with the huge Volvo V70. The big news is, however, that pricing for the Logan starts at £6,995. True, base-spec models don’t come with a radio as standard, but even the most expensive models only cost from £10,795. This is bargain-basement motoring at its best. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk Citroen C4 Picasso 7/21/2014 7 If you’re after a stylish, comfortable, spacious and well-appointed MPV, then the new C4 Picasso should be very near the top of your shopping list. It’ll be reasonably cheap to run, too with a selection of petrol and diesel engines available. OK, so it won’t reward the keen driver in the same way that a Ford S-Max will but, realistically, who buys an MPV for the dynamic thrills on offer? At the moment, there’s only the five-seat version available, but a seven-seat Grand Picasso is in the offing. What the smaller car may lack in seats, it makes up for in bootspace, with plenty of room back there for all the familial accoutrements you could ever need. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk VW Golf GTI 7/21/2014 8 Hot hatches have always been popular in this country, and many consider the Volkswagen Golf GTI to be the original and best of the bunch. It’s not the most hardcore hot hatch you can buy – that honour goes to the Renault Megane RS 265 Cup – but it’s very fast and really entertaining through the bends. Being slightly more mature than some of its rivals means that it’s capable of being the proper all-rounder that many think a ‘real’ hot-hatch needs to be. It’s a back-road weapon when you want to have some fun, but also capable of being a sensible family car – with lots of space, a big boot and a comfortable ride. It’s one of the most complete performance cars available at the moment. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk Audi A3 Saloon 7/21/2014 9 Small saloons, based on small family hatchbacks have never been particularly popular in this country – their styling has always looked like something of an afterthought and they don’t offer the practicality associated with their hatch equivalents. Now, however, Audi is attempting to change our perceptions with the saloon version of its popular A3. It’s certainly good looking – classy and stylish, and with none of the awkwardness often seen on cars of this ilk. Inside, it has the usual outstanding Audi interior. It also drives nicely and has a wide range of powerful, economical engines. There’s plenty of room for four adults and the boot is 45 litres bigger than the Sportback hatch’s. Overall, it’s a very fine achievement. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk BMW 3 Series GT 7/21/2014 10 This represents a slightly offbeat alternative to the ever-popular 3 Series saloon and estate. It attempts to give the 3 Series a greater emphasis on comfort and refinement, rather than outright dynamic ability that’s been the marque’s trademark for so long. The GT is bigger in every way and the rear space on offer rivals its bigger 5 Series stablemate. That extra space has resulted in some ungainly proportions, however, and some models are pretty expensive. But, if you want the BMW badge with more comfort, space, refinement and luxury than the average 3 Series then this car starts to make a great deal of sense. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk Fiat 500L MPW 7/21/2014 11 Fiat’s latest addition to the ever-expanding 500 range has been designed as an image-led alternative to the Vauxhall Zafira, Kia Carens and Ford Grand C-Max. This is by far the furthest stretch of the original Fiat 500 idea, and while it will certainly stand-out from the crowd, it may not win any beauty prizes. That said, it’s practical and, with seven-seat versions starting at around £18,000, it’s a bit cheaper than some of its rivals and many people are likely to be wooed by its offbeat image. PowerPoint Presentation: http://motorsearchuk.co.uk Jaguar F-Type 7/21/2014 12 Billed as the natural successor to Jaguar’s iconic E-Type, the F-Type combines several wonderful things into one stunningly beautiful package. It’s fast, loud, muscular and unmistakably British. Our choice would be either the V6S or the V8S (the base V6 doesn’t quite have the performance that its price demands) both of which offer plenty of power and some of the best exhaust notes available on a road car. Yes, the F-Type doesn’t quite have the dynamic polish of the Porsche 911 and the boot is tiny, but it has charm aplenty and when you’re looking at this end of the market, that’s just as important as any rational criteria.
