COST 290 :: Wi-QoSTTraffic and QoS Management in Wireless Multimedia Networks: COST 290 :: Wi-QoST Traffic and QoS Management in Wireless Multimedia Networks Yevgeni Koucheryavy Tampere University of Technology, FINLAND +358 40 771 0619 [email protected] http://www.cost290.org Outline of the presentation: Outline of the presentation History and background Objectives Organization and Timetable Current Activity Future History: History In accordance to COST 290 website COST initiative in Wireless Multimedia Networks website became available online on October 7th, 2002 January 2003, the first draft of the MoU Technical Annex released 35 participants from 17 countries contributed February 13, 2003, the proposal was presented at 58th COST-TIST meeting oral approval was granted June 2003 was announced as expected date for CSO approval History: History October 21, 2003 COST initiative was approved by COST-TIST TC assigned number is 290 December 04, 2003 the COST 290 Action was approved by CSO March 10, 2004 the Action became operational budget is assigned for 12 countries Objectives: Objectives The main objective of the Action is to increase the knowledge on future advanced Multiservice Wireless Networks (MWNs) and specifically on traffic nature and behavior and its impact on network architecture, performance and planning. Special attention must be given to Quality of Service and related aspects in both access networks and core networks in the presence of mixed multimedia traffic. To accomplish this, new analytical tools, software implementations and prototypes have to be developed and validated. Background: Background Some roots came out from COST 263 Quality of Future Internet Services, QofIS, ran until November 2003 contributed to the area of Internet QoS architectures, protocols and mechanisms and COST 264 Enabling Networked Multimedia Group Communication, ran until September 2002 contributed to the area of multimedia fixed and wireless Internet-based networking mixed with new members new community Relations to exist COST Actions: Relations to exist COST Actions 273 and 279 do relate to the area of traffic engineering and QoS control in multimedia-enabled wireless networks but place special bias on physical layer aspects and analytical analysis do not concentrate on architectural-technical issues and QoS provisioning Relations to exist COST Actions: Relations to exist COST Actions 285 focused on computational tools for modeling and simulation an important complimentary area we envisage the possibility of fostering good collaboration, particularly in the evolution and development of new analytical tools 289 mainly deals with lower layer protocols and techniques for adequate capacity and access provision Timetable: Timetable Started on June 2004, and is scheduled to finish on June 2008 3 yearly MC meetings 1st: MTRI, Malta, Gozo, October 2004 2nd: University Haute Alsace, France, February 2005 3rd: Democritos University of Thrace, Greece, May 2005 in conjunction with WWIC conference Signatories: Signatories 23 countries have signed MoU Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom 1 non-EU country participates Russia (nomination will be approved by CSO on March 2005) being signed Turkey 1 non-EU country expressed interest South Korea (ETRI) Participating Institutions: Participating Institutions 51 institutions 42 Universities 4 Research Bodies 3 Industry 2 Operators 82 individuals (subscribed to the mailing list) Organization: Organization Action Management: Action Management Chairman Yevgeni Koucheryavy, Institute of Communication Engineering, Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, FINLAND Vice-Chairman Giovanni Giambene, Department of Informational Engineering, University of Siena, ITALY WGs Management: WGs Management WG1 “Traffic Engineering” Dr. Dirk Staehle, Department of Distributed Systems, Institute of Computer Science, University of Wuerzburg, Germany WG2 “Mobility and Interoperability” Prof. Francisco Barcelo, Deapartament d'Enginyeria Telemàtica, UPC, Spain WG3 “Network Architecture and Planning” Prof. Torsten Braun, Institute of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics, University of Bern, Switzerland WG4 “Services, regulations, and economic aspects” Prof. Vasilios Siris, Department of Computer Science, University of Crete & Institute of Computer Science (ICS) Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) Meetings Participation: Meetings Participation 1st meeting 38 participants 10 technical documents was too busy MC meeting 2nd meeting 43 participants 16 technical documents Invited Speakers: Invited Speakers 2nd meeting Dr. Andrei Gurtov, Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT), Advanced Research Unit, Helsinki, Finland Infrastructure support for Host Identity Protocol 3rd meeting Prof. Ian F.
