Technology Transfer to Library of Congress 'Digital Culpeper' MIC’s Basic Components:  MIC’s Basic Components Union Catalog Organization Directory Database Cataloging Utility Dynamic, contextual portals Individual web portals for each participating archive Education and Outreach Space Slide10:  Archives Database andlt;archiveIDandgt; Data registry andlt;semantic registry data elementsandgt; andlt;MARC Core elementsandgt; andlt;Dublin Core elementsandgt; andlt;other metadata maps, as desiredandgt; andlt; Archive maps (attribute for each includes archive’s data label and element order number for each data element) Element Tables Tables for each registered element – label and value contained within each element. OAI Table andlt;archiveIDandgt; andlt;recordIDandgt; andlt;datestamp-creationandgt;andlt;datestamp-modificationandgt; andlt;datestamp-deletionandgt; Indexing Tables Created by the search engine from searchable fielded data. Cataloging Utility XSLT Export Utility: MARC; Dublin Core; MARC andamp; DC in XML and XML/RDF field-delimited Mapping/Ingest Utility Global Search, Retrieval and Web Display Archive-specific Search, Retrieval and Web Display Archive Format MIC Design The MIC Approach:  The MIC Approach PROBLEM: There is no one place for discovery of moving image materials Union Catalog:  Union Catalog The 'Who has what' database Must reach across entire spectrum of collections large, high-profile collections small, specialized collections public/private/non-profit television stations/networks/motion picture studios theatrical features andamp; home movies/fiction andamp; non-fiction/edited andamp; unedited, avant-garde/experimental, etc. multitude of formats Union Catalog:  Union Catalog Maps/displays/exports in various metadata schema MARC for interoperability, esp. with print materials Dublin Core (XML) for data sharing, ease of use MPEG-7 for non-textual indexing, segmenting IEEE LOM for educational portals (Science goes to the movies) Each archive’s own schema - for local ownership Solution: MIC Core Registry of data elements specific to any moving image collections Core Metadata Registry Maps:  Core Metadata Registry Maps The MIC Approach:  The MIC Approach PROBLEM: Not all repositories will contribute to a union catalog Archive Directory:  Archive Directory Searchable directory of moving image repositories Contact information, home page URL, logo Collection strengths (forms, subjects) and size Activities (programming, preservation, cataloging, etc.) How to obtain materials, etc. Pre-test ended January 17, 2003 Revision of data elements underway! Archive Directory:  Archive Directory Generates 'domain maps' to generate dynamic graphical representations of the community University of Washington, in collaboration with Internet-2, will develop Shibboleth Authentication/Authorization for organization data managers--to edit and manage their own directory entry. Archive Directory:  Archive Directory Means for user to pre-select archives to search against role subject areas formats accessibility Using drop-down menu 'domain-at-a-glance' pages Directory search to identify archives to search against Domain maps:  Domain maps “Clickable” maps to browse by location:  'Clickable' maps to browse by location UCLA Film and Television Archive, Hollywood, CA Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley, CA Academy Film Archive, Hollywood, CA Accessibility: Text-based alphabetic browsing will also be provided.
