Slide1:  Understanding and Preparing for Earthquakes Presenter’s Name Affiliation Prepared by: Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde University of California at Davis Biological Engineering Biomedical Engineering Chemical Engineering Civil Engineering Computer Engineering Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering Aeronautical Engineering Slide2:  My Journey High School: Waverly, NY (K-12) Bachelor of Science: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) (4 years) Master of Science: Stanford University (1) PhD: UC Davis (almost 3 years) Favorite Subjects:  Favorite Subjects Math Science Physics Necessary Skills Reading Writing Communication/Speaking Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide4:  What Civil Engineers Do Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide5:  What Civil Engineers Do Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide6:  What Civil Engineers Do Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide7:  What Civil Engineers Do Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide8:  What Civil Engineers Do Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide9:  Try to think of any aspect of your life that is not touched by Civil Engineering 1.) Deep impact on society and lives 2.) Challenging, building things hundreds of times bigger than ourselves 3.) Thrilling! Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide10:  How do Civil Engineers do it? What has advanced over the last few hundred years that has made seemingly impossible tasks possible? Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide11:  How do Civil Engineers do it? Physics Mathematics Experience Intuition The science (and art) of Civil Engineering Solving some of the most important problems we face today Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide12:  One Focus Within Civil Engineering: Earthquake Engineering! Earthquake engineering deals with the effects of earthquakes on people and their environment and the methods of reducing those effects. Definition: Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide13:  A Brief History Lesson Earthquake engineering is a new field (40-50 years old) During 1960’s we were able to locate EQ locations accurately The oldest written record of earthquakes date back 3000 years to China Japan: 1600 years US: 350 years (California 200 years) Humans have experienced earthquakes for MILLIONS of years and only within the last 40-50 years are modern countries able to deal with them Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide14:  Understanding Earthquakes We first need to understand the EARTH: 25 miles deep 225 million years ago 200 million years ago 135 million years ago 65 million years ago Present Day Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide15:  Understanding Earthquakes We first need to understand the EARTH: Why does the crust move? 25 miles deep COLD!!! HOT!!! Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide16:  Tectonic Plates = “Pieces of the crust” Earthquake Locations Pacific Plate Antarctic Plate America Plate Africa Plate Eurasia Plate Australia Plate 6 Continental Plates (14 sub-continental plates) Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide17:  1906 San Francisco Earthquake (M=7.9) Earthquakes Can Be Devastating Just 1 Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide18:  1906 San Francisco Earthquake Structural Damage Causes Most Death Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Landslides:  Landslides Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide20:  Lifelines can be broken Widespread Fires 1906 San Francisco Earthquake: Broken water mains Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Tsunami:  Tsunami 220,000 dead or missing Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide22:  Developing Countries Loss of homes, electricity, water 2005 Pakistan Earthquake Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Earthquakes World-wide:  Earthquakes World-wide Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Earthquakes World-wide:  Earthquakes World-wide Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide25:  Today…..United States Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide26:  Today…..United States Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Can we predict earthquakes?:  Can we predict earthquakes? Not really, but we do know the likelihood Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide28:  We try to reduce earthquake damage by… …Understanding exactly what happens during earthquakes …Using principles of math and physics to figure out how the shaking affects their buildings and bridges …Using intuition, reasoning, and their math and physics skills to design better, earthquake resistant buildings Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide29:  Build models to mimic real buildings Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide30:  Build models to mimic real buildings Computer models involve principles of math and physics Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide31:  Use engineering judgment along with computer models and experiments to decide what the best way to deal with the problem is Bearings or isolators Structure Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide32:  Shake Table Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Slide33:  We still have a lot of work to do… Loma Prieta, US 1989 Ben Fell, Amit Kanvinde (UC Davis) Pakistan, 2005 Slide34:  Thank you!
