Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen: Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen: Career Highlights as Special Assistant: Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen : Career Highlights as Special Assistant As Special Assistant to the President at California State University, Chico, Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen has completed a number of special projects primarily focused on facilities usage and cost recovery. Such projects have included space policies and procedures, liability, fee structures, auxiliaries and nonstate funded entities, event management, software solutions, best practices throughout the California State University 23-campus system and the improvement of town and community relationships. Harmsen has served in this role since 2016, following a successful term as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at California State University, Sacramento. Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen: Educational Leadership: Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen : Educational Leadership Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen enjoyed teaching as a Professor of Geology at California State University, Fresno for more than 25 years (1985-2011). She became Associate Dean at the school’s College of Science and Mathematics in 2007 – a post she held for more than four years. In 2011, Harmsen accepted the position of Dean at the California State University, Chico’s College of Natural Sciences, a role in which she would serve until 2014. She then relocated to California State University, Sacramento where she accepted the position of Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. Initially an Assistant Professor in the school’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (1985-1987), Harmsen would serve as Associate Professor (1987-1991) and Professor (1991-2011). She became the Chair of the Department in 1997. Harmsen served as an Assistant to the Dean for Special Projects at the school’s College of Science and Mathematics (2001-2003) before returning to her professorial/chairman role in 2003. Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen: Research Experience : Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen : Research Experience During her tenure as Professor at California State University, Fresno, Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen was an active researcher who was awarded numerous grants that totaled millions of dollars. As a researcher, Harmsen traveled on expeditions that took her around the globe – including two seasons in Antarctica where she worked to unravel the early history of the region’s Transantarctic Mountains. In addition to her work as researcher, Harmsen has written papers and given presentations at a number of national and international conferences. Harmsen taught at the Fresno campus for more than 25 years. Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen: South Pacific Semester: Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen : South Pacific Semester During her time as a Professor and leader at California State University, Fresno, Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen was actively involved with international programs. Notably, Harmsen was instrumental in the creation of the popular South Pacific Semester – a semester-long study abroad program. Harmsen served in various roles at California State University, Fresno, including that of Associate Professor, Professor, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences Chair and Associate Dean for the College of Science and Mathematics. Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen: Administrative Highlights as Dean : Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen : Administrative Highlights as Dean Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen completed her tenure as Dean of the College of Natural Sciences at California State University, Chico between 2011 and 2014. In this role, Harmsen worked closely with the Council of Chairs, and others, to promote new sources of funding, reduce expenditures and improve the utilization of existing resources. This effort resulted in the successful management of a $1.3 million budget deficit . In addition, Harmsen successfully addressed a $130,000 budget deficit at the Gateway Science Museum – and increased fundraising by more than 150 percent to $1.6 million. Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen Awards: Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen Awards Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen was awarded the Cotton Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Geology while attending Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Frederika “Fraka” Harmsen: Academic Program Development: Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen : Academic Program Development Frederika “ Fraka ” Harmsen accomplished a great deal as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at California State University, Sacramento (2014-2016) including engagement with, and development of, a number of academic programs. Harmsen worked to engage the Sacramento campus in the WASC re-accreditation process and participated in the ABET and AACSB re-accreditation visits. She also guided the development of such new academic programs as the Master of Science in Finance and the completion degree for the BA Arts and Letters. She currently serves as Special Assistant to the President at California State University, Chico.
