PowerPoint Presentation: How To Get Rid Of Dark Circles / Under Eye Circles A lot of people across various age groups tend to get under eye circles and the many reasons they attribute the dark circles to are lack of sleep, stress, strain on the eyes due to excessive use of the computer to name a few. Additionally, dark circles can be due to genetic trait, can be post-traumatic, can be post-inflammatory, or can be a side effect of any drug use. Mercury or silver containing preparations can cause slate blue or grey brown discolouration. Long term treatment with minocycline(an antibiotic) can cause grey discolouration. Cosmetics containing phototoxic agents(8-methoxypsoralen) can cause periorbital melanosis. Certain kind of eczemas(eg. Atopic dermatitis) can cause increased pigmentation. To manage under eye circles, a thorough investigation to rule out any iron deficiency anaemia, Vit B12 deficiency or to rule out any systemic illness must be conducted. Treatment includes the following: 1. Adequate rest, nutritious diet, avoiding prolonged exposure to the computer screen and a healthy work life balance. PowerPoint Presentation: 2. In cases of periorbital melanosis due to cosmetic or any chemical use, the offending cosmetic / chemical should be disconitnued. In these cases, a mild steroid may help in reducing the irritation and subsequently decrease the pigmentation. Topical application of medicines containing Retinol, Vit K, Biophytex, Proteasyl, Propylene Glycol, Dimethicone etc. applied in the night time can help in reducing under eye circles. 3. Recent advances have suggested a role of Vit C extract in removing dark circles. 4. Chemical Peeling - Among all the available chemical peels that can be used for facial pigmentation, a small minority can be exclusively used for under eye circles. Chemical peels with glycolic acid, lactic acid, pyruvic acid, etc. can be used at 2-3 weeks interval for best results. 5. LASERs - Use of LASER by a qualified dermatologist / cosmetologist can also give good results. So if under eye circles are bringing you down then fret not.
