And our role in it changed. No longer can we afford to focus only on the domestic. Our view must turn more outward towards the world, nurturing relationships with other countries and improving international studies in our schools.” “We need to put the ‘world’ back into ‘world-class’ education.” “International education shouldn’t be an add-on. International education can be integrated into the teaching of many subjects.” Young Americans in the Dark on Geography: National Geographic - Roper Survey 2002:  Young Americans in the Dark on Geography: National Geographic - Roper Survey 2002 83 % of young Americans aged 18 to 24 could not find Afghanistan on the map; fewer than 25 % could name the four countries officially known as nuclear powers; 25 % of the college bound high school students could not name the ocean that separates the U.S. from Asia; 34% could not find the Pacific ocean of the map; 75 % believed that Vietnam is an island; over 30 % estimated the population of the U.S. to be a billion or more. IHS is a statewide program addressing the needs of the secondary schools in Illinois in the international dimension of teaching, learning, and community engagement. By focusing on global awareness,skills, and knowledge the program provides essential components of modern world class education and workforce preparation necessary to succeed in the today’s complex world . Several of the Afghani students commented that they are thankful for US intervention and would like to see continued and greater support from the international community and the UN Security Council, in particular. Several statements included, "We relate our freedom to America," and "We want the international community to be present in Afghanistan." Some students shared that they have some very good teachers in their school, but must sit on the floor, as they lack sufficient tables and chairs. They also do not enough science equipment and other supplies. The Afghan people are also anxious to work toward rebuilding their country. Mr. Culbertson from Von Steuben Area 1. School Curricula/ Courses Foreign language Language Arts/Fine Arts/Humanities Social Studies /Economics/ Business Science Three years of language other than English; Three years of coursework addressing world literature and humanities, including a semester in arts or music with content emphasizing international cultural and historical components; Three years of coursework addressing major social, cultural, economic and political developments in different regions in the world; +one semester of global or geographical area studies and at least one semester of economics or equivalent. One semester science coursework which explores science in the context of connections of biological and environmental global interdependence. Area 2. Teacher/Administrator Professional Development General Professional Development Graduate Programs and/or CPDU 30% participate in courses or workshops designed to assist teachers to integrate international content into courses in their discipline and address relevant Illinois Content Area Teaching Standards (see Area 5 and Illinois Learning Standards). 30% participate in one three-hour graduate course, or obtain at least four Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) related to international education, the study of world cultures and/or foreign languages.
