Slide1:  Evaluation of skin separation (silvering) in fruit of bell pepper cultivars. Andy Wyenandt, Extension Specialist in Vegetable Pathology, Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension, Rutgers University Wesley L. Kline, Cumberland County Agricultural Agent, Rutgers Cooperative Research and Extension, Rutgers University Phytophthora blight in New Jersey:  Phytophthora blight in New Jersey Phytophthora blight (P. capsici) endemic to most of south Jersey… Pepper, cucurbits and tomatoes are major crops… Poor crop rotations are a major contributor to problem… Have both mating types (A1 & A2) in same field(s) and mefenoxam-insensitivity in some production areas… Pepper production in New Jersey:  Pepper production in New Jersey 4 pepper production systems in NJ. Single row plantings High, domed-shaped beds with overhead irrigation Raised beds, with buried drip irrigation Double row plantings High, raised beds with BPM/drip irrigation High raised, bare soil beds/drip irrigation In 2003, 3,600 A with value of 12 million dollars Water pooling after heavy rain...:  Water pooling after heavy rain... Phytophthora-tolerance screening:  Phytophthora-tolerance screening Phytophthora research has been carried out in NJ for the past 30 years… Dr. Steve Johnston with Dr. Wes Kline Basic production guidelines… Selection of Phytophthora-resistant bell pepper cultivars… Use of Paladin has been estimated to save growers 19 million dollars over last decade… Skin-separation or ‘silvering’ of bell pepper fruit:  Skin-separation or ‘silvering’ of bell pepper fruit Relatively new ‘disorder’… ‘Silvering’ associated with bell pepper cultivars which have Phytophthora-resistance… Resistant to crown rot phase… Resistant/tolerant cvs. on 75% acreage in New Jersey. Becoming a bigger issue in New Jersey… USDA grading and shipment rejection Skin separation or ‘silvering’ of bell pepper fruit:  Skin separation or ‘silvering’ of bell pepper fruit USDA Grading Standards:  USDA Grading Standards Score as injury (US Fancy Grade) when aggregating more than 5% of the surface on a pepper 3.5” in length and 3” in diameter. Score as damage (US No 1 Grade) when aggregating more than 10% of the surface on a pepper 2.5” in diameter and length. Score as serious damage when aggregating more than 25% of the surface on a pepper 2.5” in diameter and length. Objectives…:  Objectives… Evaluate new bell pepper breeding lines and cultivars for Phytophthora-resistance and for development of ‘silvering’ in fruit… Evaluate the effects of production system on development of ‘silvering’ in bell pepper fruit (2006). Material and Methods:  Material and Methods Trials at 2 sites in southern New Jersey… RAREC – high, raised beds, double-row planting (18 plants/plot) on black plastic mulch with drip irrigation on-farm – high, ridged bare soil beds with overhead irrigation, single row (9 plants) Randomized complete block design 4 replications Standard production practices… Slide12:  Percentage of fruit with silvering by harvest and % Phytophthora-infected plants in bell pepper lines, 2005. Slide13:  Percentage of fruit with silvering by harvest and % Phytophthora-infected plants in bell pepper lines, 2005. Slide14:  Percentage of skin separation by number of harvested fruit and percentage of Phytophthora-infected plants at RAREC and on-farm site in 2005. Results/Discussion…:  Results/Discussion… ‘Silvering’ or skin separation prominent during trial in 2005 New breeding lines showing promise for Phytophthora-resistance/tolerance and reduced ‘silvering’… Syngenta 12643 (high-yield) and Seminis 7609 (mid-yield) Linkage to Phytophthora-resistance?!? Does production system affect development of skin separation? Trial on effects of variety/production system on ‘silvering’ in 2006 2006 Research Trials:  2006 Research Trials NE SARE partnership grant with 3 growers 4 pepper production systems in NJ. Single row plantings High, domed-shaped beds with overhead irrigation Raised beds, with BPM/drip irrigation Double row plantings High, raised beds with BPM/drip irrigation High raised, bare soil beds/drip irrigation Also continue Phtyophthora-tolerance trials… Acknowledgments:  Acknowledgments Special thanks to Enza Zaden, Seminis, Syngenta and Harris Moran for support Bob Martino, Martino Farms, Vineland, NJ for cooperating… Slide18:  Andy Wyenandt, Extension Specialist in Vegetable Pathology [email protected] Wesley L.
