Slide1: Don’t Worry; He’s Coming!: Don’t Worry; He’s Coming! …You need to know that in the last days, mockers are going to have a heyday. Reducing everything to the level of their puny feelings, they’ll mock, 'So what’s happened to the promise of his Coming? Our ancestors are dead and buried, and everything’s going on just as it has from the first day of creation. Nothing’s changed.' They forget on purpose: They forget on purpose They conveniently forget [willfully ignore] that long ago all the galaxies and this very planet were brought into existence out of watery chaos by God’s word. Then God’s word brought the chaos back in a flood that destroyed the world. The current galaxies and earth are fuel for the final fire. God is poised, ready to speak his word again, ready to give the signal for the judgment and destruction of the desecrating skeptics. 2 Peter 3:3-7 The Message Scoffers: Scoffers Uniformitarianism Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.' vs. 4 NIV Interventionism 5They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the word of his command, and he brought the earth up from the water and surrounded it with water. 6Then he used the water to destroy the world with a mighty flood. Judgment!: Judgment! By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. Vs. 7 NIV The day of the Lord is surely coming, as unexpectedly as a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the heavenly bodies will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be burned up. Vs. 10 LB When that day comes, the skies will be destroyed with fire, and everything in them will melt with heat. Vs. 12 CEV Time: Time 8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. NIV To you, a thousand years is like the passing of a day, or like a few hours in the night. Ps. 90:4 CEV 9The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise to return, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving more time for everyone to repent. NLT No life after death: No life after death 'I was nothing: I am nothing. So thou who art still alive, eat, drink, and be merry.' (Probably Epicurean—hedonist). 'Once I had no existence; now I have none. I am not aware of it. It does not concern me.' Despair: Despair 'Charidas, what is below?' 'Deep darkness.' 'But what of the paths upward?' 'All a lie.' 'And Pluto?' (the god of the underworld). 'Mere talk.' 'Then we’re lost.' Holiness: Holiness 11Since everything around us is going to melt away, what holy, godly lives you should be living! 12You should look forward to that day and hurry it along. NLT 14And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to live a pure and blameless life. And be at peace with God. Get Ready: Get Ready We should live our lives as though Christ were coming today and plan our lives as if He might wait a thousand years.
