Need to nurture both leadership and clinical skills to exert that influence New nurses are trained in operating the latest technology and complex medical equipment. Once at the bedside they rarely get the opportunity to apply even basic leadership principles. Nursing as a profession does a disservice to new nurses by not developing their leadership capabilities . Nursing Leadership Theories : Nursing Leadership Theories Quantum leadership theory - Porter-O’Grady: Quantum leadership theory - Porter-O’Grady Traditionally, worker knowledge rose vertically up the hierarchy Today - Knowledge of technology has changed this traditional hierarchy Growth in knowledge in the horizontal connections… Bedside nurses (24/7) are at the first level of decision-making Need for autonomy in their decision-making however slight. - Decide on calling a physician, care plans and interventions. This forms the building blocks of leadership. Nurses can be trained by evaluating their decisions with corresponding patient outcomes. Develop staff ‘self-direction’ rather than ‘giving direction“ Thus motivate leadership from the bottom up Transformational leadership Theory - Sullivan & Decker (2001): Transformational leadership Theory - Sullivan & Decker (2001) It merges ideals of leaders and followers Unites both manager and employee to pursue a greater good Encourages ‘others’ to exercise leadership It is empowering It promotes change and suites the extremely dynamic health care system. Motivate new nurses to submit feedback on how well unit specific procedures are carried out and implemented Encourages new nurses to take an active and participatory role in policy within their jurisdiction and power. Dynamic leader-follower relationship theory - Laurent (2000) : Dynamic leader-follower relationship theory - Laurent (2000) The leader and follower exchanges are dynamic. Both parties are vital to the success of the unit. The leader provides direction to the employee, not control, allowing for maximum participation by the employee for a dynamic relationship This type of interaction can instill motivation and commitment.. But if you do it right, the rest of the journey will be easy Look at your life and acknowledge where you are and why you are where you are. Stand in front of the mirror and say hello to your biggest problem and the cause of all your life's anxiety and strife: You. Realize that in any past life situation that you failed – You could have done better, and would have changed the outcome of that situation. Slide33: Pay close attention to every interaction you have with people. Later, mentally replay the interaction and make corrections The key here - your response to what happens to you. You can "moan" or look at it constructively to gain insight. Get value out of every situation you are faced with. As this becomes a habit, you'll find that your interactions will go much better. b) Taking responsibility for where you are going: b) Taking responsibility for where you are going This becomes easy once you overcome the first step ie. Realize that you are the cause of all that happened to you. Now you commit to fixing or changing it.
