Large Hadron Collider and ATLAS: Canadian Participation:  Large Hadron Collider and ATLAS: Canadian Participation 1 June 2006 Rob McPherson Canadian Institute of Particle Physics and the University of Victoria http://www.atlas-canada.ca/ Particle Physics:  Particle Physics Particle physics has the simplest and most fundamental goals of any science: find and identify the most basic building blocks of nature identify and understand the forces that govern their interactions The Big Picture :  The Big Picture  Time universe cooling energy density decreasing t = now t = 0 Accelerators probe higher energy (earlier time) current > O (100 GeV)  LEP, Tevatron HERA Next: > O (1 TeV)  LHC, proton collisions at 14 TeV Compared to Cosmic Rays:  Compared to Cosmic Rays Proton collisions at 14 TeV  cosmic ray of 100 PeV hitting atmosphere LHC will be first facility to precisely probe scales of high-energy cosmic rays Nature does this experiment for us every day, but we do not have precise accelerator and detector in place to observe the interactions with high statistics Standard Model of Particle Physics:  Standard Model of Particle Physics Standard Model was proposed ~ 45 years ago Unified electricity, magnetism, weak forces Has passed every experimental test since then Many new particle discoveries, precision experiment agreement Several experimental Nobel Prizes, 1 theory Nobel Prize But … Standard Model is a Quantum Field Theory Quantum theories are brilliantly successful But such theories have trouble “inserting masses” for particles Standard Model uses a trick: The Higgs mechanism We are missing a basic prediction of the Standard Model: The Higgs boson Higgs Analogy:  Higgs Analogy Imagine a room full of evenly spaced, chattering politicians... This is like space, filled with the Higgs field A well-known politician walks in, and attracts a mass of groupies, increasing her momentum and resistance to movement i.e. she acquires mass, like a particle moving through the Higgs field Similarly, if a rumour crosses the room, it creates the same kind of clustering in the “field”. In the analogy, this cluster is the Higgs particle This explanation is based on David Miller's winning entry in a 1993 competition for explaining the Higgs mechanism to a British politician... Find Higgs and then done??:  Find Higgs and then done?? Clearly need a project that can discover any conceivable Higgs Boson Must be less than ~ few hundred GeV Even then: Standard Model appears to “diverge” (break) at energy scales ~ 1 TeV Many models of new physics that fix this Supersymmetry, extra dimensions, compositeness Predict new particles, black holes …. Below about 1 TeV LHC and ATLAS designed to produce and observe any/all of this LHC: Experiments:  LHC: Experiments Canada and LHC/ATLAS:  Canada and LHC/ATLAS Essential contributions to the construction of the accelerators in the LHC chain TRIUMF Responsibility for critical parts of the ATLAS experiment design and construction Core ATLAS detector construction group was Alberta, Carleton, Toronto, TRIUMF, Victoria High-level trigger system Alberta, McGill, Montreal, Victoria Tier 1 computing facility SFU, TRIUMF Tier 2 analysis facilities Alberta, McGill, SFU, Toronto, Victoria And soon: physics Canadian Accelerator Contributions:  Canadian Accelerator Contributions Canada’s national accelerator lab, TRIUMF, in unique position to make LHC contributions About $40M in total Small part of the accelerator, but critical for the LHC success Upgrades to injection system Power supplies for injection “kickers” Collimation and beam cleaning in high radiation environment LHC Beam Cleaning system:  LHC Beam Cleaning system TRIUMF’s expertise in “warm magnets” in high radiation environment gave unique opportunity for contributing to system design Money spent in Canada (ALSTOM, Tracy, PQ) All TRIUMF contributions successfully completed LHC nearing completion. Over $4M from NSERC MIG.
