LifeShapes:  LifeShapes Teaching drawn from the book, The Passionate Church by Mike Breen and Walt Kallestad Key Passage Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” Mark 1:14-15:  Key Passage Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” Mark 1:14-15 Jesus calls for disciples to follow him. Disciple = learner, student or apprentice. Discipleship is being re-patterned on Jesus. How does one learn from Jesus or how can we be re-patterned on Jesus today? Discipleship, What Jesus says about it::  Discipleship, What Jesus says about it: Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:27 … Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matt. 11:29 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. Matt. 16:24 Discipleship:  Discipleship Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:27 … Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matt. 11:29 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. Matt. 16:24 How could that work in my life? Discipleship:  Discipleship How could I learn to live in God’s Kingdom in my circumstances? How could I take up the cross and follow? Do I recognize opportunities for this in my life? How could I teach and disciple others? Discipleship:  Discipleship involves understanding the times. Chronos Clock time Quantity of time Kairos Quality of time Season ‘Bottleneck’ Discipleship:  Discipleship involves responding in Kairos time. Some common Kairos responses: On the farm: Make hay while sun shines. At sea: Sail with the tide. At the smith: Strike when the iron is hot. Kairos moments Getting personal here::  Kairos moments Getting personal here: Kairos moments are those times and events that impact us personally, positively or negatively. Kairos moments involve emotions. Kairos awareness always overrides Chronos awareness. Kairos moments Getting personal here::  Kairos moments Getting personal here: Some of my recent Kairos Moments: Phone call from an Austrian hospital A near car accident Being told about possible dismissal Kairos Moments:  Kairos Moments Kairos moments signal opportunities for discipleship growth. A learning process can begin. Kairos Moments:  Kairos Moments Jesus Christ is Lord of all times. He is the A and the W. Kairos moments are those times in which we can best learn from Him. Key Passage Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” Mark 1:14-15:  Key Passage Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” Mark 1:14-15 God’s Kingdom, with all its possibilities, has come. Now is the Kairos time to actively respond. Respond in active discipleship: repenting and believing. Do we hear Jesus differently now? Introducing the Circle: A disciple’s learning tool on life’s path:  Introducing the Circle: A disciple’s learning tool on life’s path Kairos moment The circle deferred Some alternative responses to kairos moments: :  The circle deferred Some alternative responses to kairos moments: Kairos moment Stop ‘it’ happening again. (post-crisis management) Standard functional learning and adjustment, action / reflection. Avoid personal implications by not owning our experience. This may involve focusing on other people. “They are responsible for me feeling this way.” or “I am upset so they need to change.” Continue as best we can. (stoicism) Swallow or bury our kairos experience and soldier on. The hidden costs of deferred discipleship: :  The hidden costs of deferred discipleship: The costs of not taking up one’s cross and following: No discipleship benefits peace, freedom and spiritual strength. Failure to thrive ( FTS or FTT) Chronic immaturity Getting stuck A final encouragement: :  A final encouragement: This may look like a good way to travel but… A final encouragement: :  A final encouragement: this is where the rubber hits the road. Slide18:  End of part A LifeShapes:  LifeShapes The Circle: Part B Exceptional experiences create Kairos Moments.:  Exceptional experiences create Kairos Moments. Do we experience love, power and a sound mind, or . . . are we afraid and angry ? Can we imagine how Jesus would have been in our shoes in that kairos moment? So what needs to happen? Responding to Kairos Moments.:  Responding to Kairos Moments. Jesus’ discipleship prescription: Repent Believe the Good News of the Kingdom = Responding to kairos moments according to God’s Kingdom for the purpose of becoming like Jesus. Understanding Repentance::  Understanding Repentance: Old Testament meanings: bwv shuv Feel sorry, experience remorse. Turn away from or change course of action. New Testament meanings: metanoia meta-noia To change one’s mind. Understanding Repentance::  Understanding Repentance: In the commands of Jesus the call to repent is present continuous. Be ye repenting, Start repenting and don’t stop… “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Matt. 3:2 Not a single event Not a single point of entry but the commencement of an ongoing process. Understanding Repentance::  Understanding Repentance: Change involves reordering all that influences us from within. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ. 2Cor. 10:4-5 Within our minds we need to let go of some existing beliefs and embrace new ones. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. Rom. 12:2 Understanding Repentance::  Understanding Repentance: We are not without standards When a kairos moment arrives we need to consider ourselves against the revealed character of God’s Kingdom Consider the Sermon on the Mount, Matt: 5-7 Consider the Kingdom parables of Jesus Consider the Great Commandment John 13:34 & 15:12 This sets us up for turning the circle Understanding the need for Repentance::  Understanding the need for Repentance: A short word on sin Sin is simply failing to reflect God’s glory. When we don’t get it right, we sin. In considering Kairos moments we may become very aware of our sinful nature even when we have not overtly acted or failed to act. We are ‘stirred’. e.g. fear, impatience, anger As our sinful nature is exposed it requires repentance. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Rom. 3:23 Starting Repentance::  Starting Repentance: Kairos moment observe Observe Something notable has happened. What are our reactions? What are our emotions? What are our thoughts? = Observe the condition of our soul Starting Repentance::  Starting Repentance: Jesus directs us to consider our own logs first: Or how can you say to your neighbour, ‘Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, Luke 6:42 Observe Did I act / respond in love? Am I irritated or angry? Did I say something unworthy? Do I regret my conduct or attitude? = Observe the condition of our soul Turning the circle::  Turning the circle: Kairos moment observe 2. Reflect Consider our observations. Why did we react this way? Why do we feel this way? Why did these emotions rise? = Allowing Holy Spirit to search our hearts reflect Turning the circle::  Turning the circle: Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light; but if it is not healthy, your body is full of darkness. Therefore consider whether the light in you is not darkness. Luke 11:34-35 2. Reflect in prayer. Consider our observations. How is our behaviour rooted in our soul, heart and mind? What darkness is revealed in our mind? = Allowing Holy Spirit to search our hearts Turning the circle::  Turning the circle: Kairos moment observe 3. Discuss For lasting change we need to move beyond private consideration and involve others. Honestly talk through with another. Ask what the Bible says about it. Confess sins/struggles & insights so far. Take matters to prayer. Express sorrow and resolve to change = What does God’s Word say to this? reflect discuss Turning the circle::  Turning the circle: Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. James 5:16 3. Discuss This is about acknowledging the gap between what is at work within us and the character of Christ and God’s Kingdom. An open Bible is essential. = What does God’s Word say to this? Turning the circle::  Turning the circle: Kairos moment observe This is the repentance or ‘turning away’ half of the circle It is not always easy facing difficult implications for ourselves. This is not about others seeing us but about us seeing ourselves in God’s light. By this point our mind is being changed and we are deciding to believe in God for change and transformation. reflect discuss Inspiration to encourage::  Inspiration to encourage: A spiritual community consists of people who have the integrity to come clean. It is comprised of those who own their short comings and failures because they hate them more than they hate the shortcomings and failures of others, who therefore discover that a well of pure water flows beneath their most fetid corruption: Dr. Larry Crabb. Faith examined::  Faith examined: Checking our bearings on Faith, Faith is not merely intellectual agreement. Even the devil does that! Faith is a trusting response to God’s goodness. Faith is dependence on God rather than ourselves. Faith is about being obedient. Faith is about being constant. Biblical faith is about turning to God Repentance to faith::  Repentance to faith: Kairos moment observe 4. Repentance makes real change possible. What would it look like to set a new Kingdom standard for your life? How do your behaviour, attitudes or beliefs need to change? Is there something which needs to die? Do you need to go to the cross? Do you need deliverance prayer? reflect discuss plan = Seeking God’s kingdom righteousness Repentance to faith::  Repentance to faith: But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matt. 6:33 The example of Zaccheus: Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house”, Luke 19:8-9 = Seeking God’s kingdom righteousness 4. Repentance makes planning for change possible. Repentance to faith::  Repentance to faith: Kairos moment observe 5. Accountability gives strength and discipline. Account to at least one person. Real change is never private and often requires the support of another. Is this why Jesus sent out in pairs? reflect discuss plan Without accountability the wheel will not turn. account Repentance to faith::  Repentance to faith: Confessions of faith make us accountable. …and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil. 2:11 God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. 1John 4:15 5. Accountability strengthens faith This is the faith confession in consequence of the sin confession in repentance. Both are discipleship confessions. Both are to be shared with other(s). Without accountability the wheel will not turn. Full circle::  Full circle: Kairos moment observe 6. Completion of the circle Real faith always leads to action. Biblical faith always has outworking. Often noticed by others. reflect discuss plan Faith without action is biblically self contradictory. account action Full circle::  Full circle: Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith apart from works is barren? James 2:20 6. Completion of the circle The next Kairos could be quite different! Transformation is a sign of Jesus’ Kingdom Discipleship One discipleship circle::  One discipleship circle: Kairos moment observe Our lives consist of events linked by time and our responses to those events. Responding to Kairos moments this way structures our lives as a series of discipleship loops with each loop making us more like Christ. reflect discuss plan account action One discipleship circle::  One discipleship circle: Kairos moment observe At every point of the circle we have a companion to encourage, comfort, teach and empower. The circle is only a map to help us actively cooperate with the transforming Holy Spirit of God who makes disciples for Jesus. reflect discuss plan account action A not uncommon example::  A not uncommon example: Kairos moment: A negative employer review One observes: Hurt feelings made up of fear, resentment, indignation, insecurity One reflects: Awareness of not trusting God’s provision? Awareness of hurt pride? Awareness of simmering anger at the company? One discusses with another and the Bible: Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters, Col. 3:23 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! Luke 12:24 Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, Eph. 4:26 A not uncommon example::  A not uncommon example: Kairos moment: A negative employer review One plans: How in future could I respond in Godly faith? What could I do to put matters right both as a worker and in relationships? One invites accountability: The plan is shared with a respected friend for support & encouragement. There is follow up. “How are you getting on with…?” One acts in faith out of a transformed mind: Transformed action speaks and offers a sign of the Kingdom advancing. Circle complete Turning the repent -believe Circle::  Turning the repent -believe Circle: Kairos moment act account plan discuss reflect observe Slide47:  End
