Making Library Use Easier for International Students:  Making Library Use Easier for International Students NCLA Conference October 17, 2007 Susan Keely First a little history…:  First a little history… First state-supported residential arts conservatory in the U.S. 1100 students from over 40 states and 25 foreign countries 8th grade through graduate school International students make up 5% of the student population We saw a problem…:  We saw a problem… International students were falling behind in academic classes Instructors were dissatisfied with research and writing skills ESL instructor wanted students to learn to use the library Librarians sensed student frustration We sought a solution … :  We sought a solution … Determined faculty expectations of student academic skills Talked to international students Talked to our international faculty Met with the ESL instructor to discuss needs Summarized our findings…:  Summarized our findings… Non-U.S. libraries are often closed stacks Librarians viewed as keepers of books International students frustrated and confused by the open nature of U.S. libraries Faculty weren’t aware of student frustrations Realized ESL course was a perfect way to solve these problems About the ESL course…:  About the ESL course… “Academic English for Non-native Speakers” Focuses on reading, writing, note-taking and research skills Enrollment is by placement testing, student or faculty request Taken concurrently with academic classes Fall of 1999, a plan!:  Fall of 1999, a plan! ESL instructor wanted students to learn research skills Together we created a college library assignment and a high school “theme” assignment Three parts for each assignment Here’s how we start…:  Here’s how we start… Part 1 Students receive a vocabulary list of library terms We take a tour of the library with the list and define the terms as we go We pull books off the shelf and browse Next…Part 2:  Next…Part 2 Each student finds 4 sources which correspond to the assignment Students write down the bibliographic information for each source Students then write a paragraph describing each source Finally…Part 3:  Finally…Part 3 Students use their 4 sources to practice note-taking Work is turned in to the instructor for review Each student meets with the instructor to discuss their research findings Each student finds a book to check out Wrap-up:  Wrap-up ESL instructor and reference librarian meet and discuss each part ESL instructor grades assignment and discusses work with each student Instructor and librarian decide if another session is needed on a particular part Details, details…:  Details, details… Instruction sessions are held each term for both college and high school sections More sessions are added for an assignment if needed Program is constantly evolving to suit each class’s needs and academic assignments We have researched…:  We have researched… Halloween The Salem witch trials and life in colonial America American poetry French history Comments, questions…:  Comments, questions… Susan Keely Semans Library North Carolina School of the Arts 1533 S.
