Metropolitan State College of Denver Office of Human Resources Spring 2005 MSCD: A Quick Look Back: MSCD: A Quick Look Back Welcome to Metropolitan State College of Denver! This presentation is designed to help you understand Metro’s history and the resources available to you, as well as your responsibilities as an employee of the college. In 1963, the Colorado legislature created MSCD as a comprehensive, baccalaureate degree-granting institution. By statute, MSCD was created as a modified open-admissions college, accessible to every non-traditional-aged student seeking a college education. In 1965, MSCD began offering lower-division courses at different locations throughout downtown Denver; in 1967, upper-level division courses were added. Finally, in 1971 MSCD moved to the Auraria campus. MSCD was governed by the Board of Trustees for State Colleges in Colorado. Metropolitan State College of Denver: The View Looking East: Metropolitan State College of Denver: The View Looking East MSCD Now: MSCD Now On June 7, 2002, Governor Bill Owens signed HB 1165-Concerning the Establishment of an Independent Governing Board for Metropolitan State College of Denver. This bill granted MSCD the independence it sought to better meet its academic and financial needs. With the passage of HB 1165, the governor also named his appointees to MSCD’s Board of Trustees. (See MSCD’s homepage on the web for additional information regarding the Board of Trustees.) Currently, Dr. Ray Kieft serves as Interim President of the Metropolitan State College of Denver. Today, MSCD is the largest public baccalaureate college in the nation! MSCD: Part of Auraria: MSCD: Part of Auraria MSCD, a.k.a. Metro, shares the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) campus with the Community College of Denver and the University of Colorado at Denver. In a unique arrangement, AHEC acts as landlord for the campus, providing maintenance, overseeing parking, and ensuring the safety of the campus with a full-service police force. The following services/resources are offered to all staff and faculty on the Auraria campus: AHEC Services & Resources: AHEC Services & Resources Auraria Child Care Center: Located at the 9th Street Park and Colfax Avenue, the center provides full and part-time programs for children 12 months to 5 years of age. It also provides a fully accredited kindergarten and summer camp for children through age 12. You’ll know why they have made the Auraria campus one of the safest college campuses in the country. Auraria Library: The Auraria Library is centrally located on campus and contains approximately 600,000 volumes of books. The library also has more than 3,200 journal and newspaper subscriptions, a film and videotape collection, and access to more than 400 computer-assisted research databases. Healthy Moves: T’ai chi, yoga, belly dancing, nutrition, cancer support--the Healthy Moves program offers all this and more at no charge! Classes are scheduled on campus and at convenient times. You will receive a sticker that goes on your Metro ID, as well as a form for an automatic payroll deduction of $32.00 per month. With the addition of the web portal in July 2003, most of the information and services you need are at your fingertips. To obtain computer access, all your paperwork must be completed (including benefits). Once your file is complete, your 900 number and user ID will be system-generated in the Office of Human Resources. If you require immediate access, have your supervisor complete a form (under HR on-line services) and submit to HR. Go to Metro’s home page at www.mscd.edu Click on the “Faculty and Staff” tab; this will take you to many of the sites you will need, especially as a new employee. Be sure to visit the Human Resources site! Here you will find benefit information, forms, (including timesheets), handbooks, training, and student employment links. Employee Resources at MSCD: Employee Resources at MSCD As a new employee, you will need to complete the sexual harassment training within your first 30 days. Go to www.mscd.edu/psh and complete the on-line module. The training takes approximately 45 minutes; your certificate is printed upon its completion. Please fax a copy to Human Resources at 303-556-5151. As a new employee, you must also complete the on-line training program, “In Their Shoes” within your first 30 days. This module prepares all employees to work more effectively with students who have various types of disabilities. Go to www.mscd.edu to find and complete the training.
