OCLC and Libraries in Japan:  OCLC and Libraries in Japan Kimihiro Niimoto, Kinokuniya Company OCLC Members Council  October 26, 2004 NII the National Institute of Informatics:  NII the National Institute of Informatics Institution under Ministry of Education Founded in 2000, taking after the role of NACSIS, which was established in 1986 Two missions: --- To develop an advanced infrastructure as an inter-university research institute --- To conduct research on informatics Services at NII:  Services at NII Cataloging Service: NACSIS-CAT Online union catalog for books and serials --- Collections of university libraries mainly 7.6 million bibliographic records with 78 million holdings Participants can download the catalog records from the database in NACSIS-MARC format ILL Service: NACSIS-ILL Based on NACSIS-CAT online union catalog GIF: the Global ILL Framework A partnership between OCLC and NII:  GIF: the Global ILL Framework A partnership between OCLC and NII Launched in September 2002 from the proposal by NII Based on the talks at US-Japan library coordination program Linkage between OCLC and NACSIS ILL System through the ISO ILL Protocol Payments are done through the OCLC IFM System Participants (as of September 9, 2004) North America 40 libraries, Japan 100 libraries Numbers of ILL requests (April, 2003 – March, 2004) From North America to Japan --- 800 From Japan to North America --- 1,000 University Libraries:  University Libraries 703 universities in total 87 National universities The Univ. of Tokyo, Kyoto Univ. etc. 550 Private universities Keio Univ., Waseda Univ. etc. 66 Public universities University Libraries (Contd.):  University Libraries (Contd.) Most university libraries use NII Cataloging and ILL Services, which are provided free of charge All Japanese library systems for universities are compatible with NACSIS/MARC format Waseda University Library:  Waseda University Library Using the OCLC Cataloging and ILL Services, instead of NII services (Very unique in University libraries in Japan) The only INNOPAC library system user in Japan, which is not compatible with NACSIS/MARC Waseda University Library (Cataloging):  Waseda University Library (Cataloging) Adding Japanese records created by Waseda to WorldCat since 1995 Sending Japanese records to OCLC on a regular basis (3,000 records per month) since April 2004  Totaling 800,000 records as of October, 2004, which account for 65% of the WorldCat Japanese records Researchers and libraries worldwide enjoy the contribution Waseda University Library (ILL):  Waseda University Library (ILL) Numbers of ILL requests (April, 2003 – March, 2004) From OCLC ILL participants to Waseda --- 2,100 From Waseda to OCLC ILL participants --- 350 Meeting a variety of demands from researchers and libraries for Japanese materials NDL: the National Diet Library:  NDL: the National Diet Library The only national library in Japan Acquiring all materials published in Japan and preserving them as a repository library Creating catalogs of these publications as a MARC format JAPAN/MARC since 1977 Distributing the JAPAN/MARC for the public use Double Standards in MARC format:  Double Standards in MARC format JAPAN/MARC format A format after UNIMARC Popular among Public libraries   NACSIS/MARC format A unique format created by NII Popular among University libraries   US/MARC (MARC21) Not popular in Japan Japanese Library systems have no compatibility with US/MARC OCLC Services in Japan:  OCLC Services in Japan Kinokuniya Co. Ltd.
