MARION COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS & THE SOLID WASTE DEPARTMENT:  MARION COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS & THE SOLID WASTE DEPARTMENT Welcomes you to our virtual tour of the Baseline Landfill Solid Waste Facility Please click to begin. Slide2:  . Baseline Landfill Scale House The new Baseline Landfill Transfer Station, which began its construction in 2002 and was open in the winter of 2004. The building is designed to collect household waste and load the material into semi-trailers, which will then be hauled out of state to a landfill in Georgia. The Transfer Station, in whole, is almost an acre in size and is permitted by Florida Department of Environmental Protection to process up to 1,500 tons per day through the it. Baseline Landfill Transfer Station When you visit the Baseline Solid Waste Facility (Landfill) you will enter though the scale house. Vehicles bringing in solid waste must first be weighed on our scale. The scale house attendants will then direct you to the appropriate area of the landfill for proper disposal. The Marion County Solid Waste Department is made up of five different divisions. Disposal, Household Hazardous Waste, Litter Control, Recycling, and Collection. Landfill tours are available, call Baseline Landfill (352) 671-8465. Hours of Operations are Monday – Saturday 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Closed on Sunday’s. Baseline Landfill C-Cell Prior to 1962 the Baseline Landfill was a private dump for garbage. In 1962 the Arthropod Control Department operated Martel and several other satellite dump sites. In Marion County at one time there were 35 satellite landfills being operated. In 1979 the Baseline Landfill was open and then in 1983 all satellite areas were shut down. In 1982, Marion County let Urban Waste Disposal take over operations of the Baseline Landfill. Marion County terminated the contract with Urban Waste Disposal in 1987 and then the County took over operations. 1988 a consent order required lined cells to be constructed. A ground water monitoring program was also implemented. In 1988 a lined A Cell was constructed to replace the unlined landfill area. In 1991 B Cell was constructed. In 1996 C Cell was constructed with partial closures to Cells A & B. Garbage to this day is being disposed in C Cell. In the fiscal year 05-06 the Disposal Division received approximately 194,000 tons across the scale coming into the landfill or Transfer Station. RECYCLING IT’S NOT A JOB IT’S OUR DUTY!! Slide3:  The anaerobic break down of the garbage in the landfill produces methane gas. The methane gas is odorless and colorless and can be explosive. Therefore, the gas is extracted through wells and pipes and is pumped to the flare station where it is burned off. Baseline Landfill Methane Gas System Leachate (water that comes in contact with garbage) Collection is another integral part of the Baseline Landfill. Pipes are placed at the lower levels of the landfill to collect the leachate and from there it is pumped to the holding tanks (right). From the holding tanks, the leachate is pumped to the Marion County Utilities Department Water Treatment Plant. In fiscal year 05-06, there was approximately 890,000 gallons of leachate pumped to the County Owned and operated Waste Water Treatment Plant. Household Hazardous Waste Division Leachate System Hazardous materials are defined as having one or more of the following four properties: Flammability, Corrosively, Reactivity, and Toxicity. The Household Hazardous Waste Division has many different programs available to the residents of Marion County. An example is The Sharps Program. This program is offered to all Marion County residents FREE of charge and to the City Of Ocala residents. The program consist of proper disposal of hypodermic needles. For more information about our Household Hazardous Waste Division call (352) 671-8480. In fiscal year 05-06, the Household Hazardous Waste Division collected a total of 665 tons of household hazardous waste. HELP PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT RECYCLE Slide4:  Here you will find some of the vehicles that are used to pick up litter from the side of County right-of-ways. The Marion County Solid Waste Department uses inmate labor and weekend probationers to pick up the litter from the side of County right-of-way roads. In calendar year 2006 the litter crews and weekend probationers walked 3,638.4 miles and collected a total of 1,577,208 pounds of litter, which is 788.6 tons. If you or your community are interested in participating in a community cleanup, you can contact Keep Marion Beautiful by phone @ (352) 624-2979 or visit their website @ www.keepmarionbeautiful.org Litter Control Recycling The Marion County Solid Waste Department also offers recycling. There are 18 different recycling centers throughout Marion County. These centers offer a wide variety of recycling and disposal. We accept household garbage (placed in the compactors), glass bottles, plastic bottles, newspaper, corrugated cardboard, aluminum cans, tin cans, junk mail and magazines, yard waste, scrap metal, used motor oil and filters, household and car batteries, latex paint, textiles (clothing), mattresses and box springs. Any of these items can be dropped off at any Marion County Recycling Center. In calendar year 2006, the Recycling Division collected 15,422.87 tons of recyclables materials including waste tires. Totals consist of: Waste Tires: 6,977.60 tons Yard Waste: 44,857.27 tons includes Baseline Solid Waste Facility and Recycling Centers Recyclables: 8,445.27 tons Hours of operation are as follows: Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday 7 am to 5 pm. Friday 9 am to 7 pm. Closed Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. STOP THE LITTER CRITTER!! HELP! KEEP MARION COUNTY BEATUIFUL. RECYCLING TODAY STARTS TOMORROW’S FUTURE!!! Slide5:  At left, is a picture of a clam shell (boom truck) that the Marion County Solid Waste Department has within the fleet. The main operation of the Clam shell truck is to collect yard waste, scrap metal, and appliances from all eighteen recycling centers. Below, is a picture of a Solid Waste operator and one of eight roll off trucks that is also a integral part of collection and disposal at the Baseline Landfill Facility. Boom trucks and roll off trucks bring metal, yard waste and household garbage into the landfill for proper disposal. These trucks average 250 miles daily and bring in over 200 tons of waste weekly. They operate the same days a as the Recycling Centers and Landfill are open except for the designated holidays. (New Years Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day) COLLECTION REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE
