Inspired by the vision of a spirit-filled community of hope, PWRDF walks together with partners in Canada and overseas to share in the creation of a more just and peaceful world. In joy and struggle, The Primate’s Fund engages in development work, responds to emergencies, works to protect refugees, and educates and advocates for change. PWRDF PROGRAMS:  PWRDF PROGRAMS Africa – Burundi, DRC, Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, South Africa, Sudan, Uganda Latin America - Brazil, Cuba, El-Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru Asia/Pacific – Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Burma border, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Sri-Lanka, Canada – Cree (MB and AB), Kainaiwa Nation (AB), Mi’kmaq (NS), Mohawk (ON and QC), Nisga’a (BC), Nishnawbe-Aski Nation (ON), Nuu-chah-nulth (BC), Tlicho (NWT) Refugees – Egypt, India, Kenya, Middle East, Palestine, Sri-Lanka Emergencies – South Asia (earthquake), Mexico and Central America (Hurricane Stan), Darfur and Sudan (humanitarian assistance) PWRDF: WHAT WE DO:  PWRDF: WHAT WE DO PWRDF is not an operational agency. Advocacy HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE Statistics Population: 18,644,000 HIV/AIDS infected people: 1,100,000 Rate of infection: 15% Young people living with AIDS in 2004: 130,000 Young girls living with AIDS in 2004: 100,000 Number of children dead from AIDS in 2004: 17,500 Number of people who contract AIDS every day: 500 These three children are being well provided for by their AIDS infected mother due to the physical and emotional support from the PWRDF partner Nivenyee. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE PWRDF PARTNERS 1. SALAMA 2. NIVENYEE HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE SALAMA: the programs Awareness-raising Public education Radio Condom distribution Prevention AIDS education held on a public train HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE SALAMA: youth radio program Twice a week youth host an HIV/AIDS radio program 13 year-old interviews PWRDF staff, Zaida Bastos. He asks why AIDS prevalence is so high in Africa and how people living with AIDS are treated in Canada. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE SALAMA: youth activists in Yapala The education program targets young people and focuses on high schools. Youth wear their distinctive yellow shirts. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE SALAMA: HIV centre in Yapala With the help of PWRDF and other donors, SALAMA is building an HIV Centre in Yapala The centre will house the activists and allow them to travel easily between Nacala and the Malawi border The center will also be used as a training center and a testing facility, and provide a variety of services to people living with AIDS HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE SALAMA: other programs SALAMA also provides maternal and child health education They visit villages and teach the population about good nutrition and sanitation practices Women are taught how to prepare fortified porridge that can be given to children and people living with AIDS HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE NIVENYEE: the programs People living with AIDS helping others living with AIDS Advocacy Orphan care Referrals for anti- retroviral medication HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE NIVENYEE: education programs Provides a diversity of services to people living with AIDS HIV education session. The focus is to mobilize and train volunteers to better advocate on behalf of people living with AIDS. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA Population: 40 million People living with AIDS: 5.3 million Rate of infection: 21% Rate of infection in Kwa-Zulu Natal: 40.7% Percentage of people living with AIDS: 13% AIDS mortality rate: 600 people a day HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA PWRDF Partners 1. Soweto Home-Based Caregivers Co-operative (SHBCC) 2. John Wesley Community Centre HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA SHBCC: their work Provides home-care to people living with AIDS There are 15 care-givers and they have a caseload of 25 patients whom they visit as least twice a week HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA AIDS PREVALENCE RATE BY AGE GROUP 20 – 24 30.8% 25 – 29 38.8% 30 – 34 34.4% 35 – 39 24.5% Home-based care offered to man weak with AIDS. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM SOUTH AFRICA JOHN WESLEY COMMUNITY CENTRE: their work Orphan care Education Job skills training Foster families Orphan children lining-up for a hot meal HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA PWRDF PARTNERS Christian Community Services (Anglican Church of Kenya) Pregnancy Ministries Springs Ministries With the assistance and guidance of a PWRDF partner, Helen (middle) has improved her health and diet through better agricultural techniques. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA Christian Community Services: their programs Education and awareness-raising 2. Home-care and nurse counselling 3. Orphan care Esther is an AIDS orphan living with AIDS. She is being raised by her grandmother and is able to attend school through the help of a PWRDF partner. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA PREGNANCY MINISTRIES: their work Awareness-raising and education in high schools in Nairobi Gladys is an AIDS educator and is animating a high school discussion on the value of abstinence. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA SPRINGS MINISTRIES: their programs 1. Orphan care 2. Widows and HIV/AIDS 3. Income generation for orphans and widows HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA SPRINGS MINISTRIES their work The orphanage houses 61 children between the ages of 6 and 17 These 33 girls and 28 boys receive education and life skills HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA SPRINGS MINISTRIES: their work Once orphans reach 17 years, Springs Ministries helps them to set up small business. The rural pharmacy project forms youth groups and helps them to open their own business. This pharmacy belongs to a young man who grew up in the orphanage. HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA:  HIV/AIDS PROGRAM KENYA SPRINGS MINISTRIES: their work Widows are the most destitute people in Kisumu, Kenya The goat rearing program allows widows to have an income. They are also trained in tailoring and dressmaking. PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:  PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TANZANIA: a partner Uhambingueto Health Clinic was built with the support of PWRDF The clinic runs a maternal and infant health program Mothers bring their children for vaccines and to monitor their weight and nutritional status. PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:  PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TANZANIA: a partner The Uhambingueto Community Health Program Provides clean water to 12,000 villagers The program also addresses food security and provides loans to farmers PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:  PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TANZANIA: Mrs. Liganga is one of the beneficiaries of the heifer program funded by PWRDF in the Diocese of Masasi. With the proceeds from the selling of her calves, she was able to build a new house with 5 bedrooms. PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:  PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TANZANIA: a partner Seed Multiplication Program – the Diocese of Masasi Work with local farmers to develop a resistant maize seed being developed for sale and income generation. PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:  PWRDF GRASSROOTS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM MOZAMBIQUE: a partner This group of women are members of CAIXA, a women’s credit union in the city of Nampula. They came to tell us their stories. CAIXA is the most viable credit union in the country.
