The purpose of this memorial will be to commemorate the fourteen women murdered at L’Ecolé Polytechnique, Montreal, and to reflect on its historical significance to Canadian women’s advancement in Engineering and Science.   The UBC Alma Mater Society is the initiating sponsor and, therefore, at this stage only UBC students (undergraduate and graduate) are invited to submit ideas, but may collaborate with students from other Canadian institutions. Suggestions for submissions: The submissions may take several forms such as monuments, film, or electronic medium. The public commemoration should leave a lasting impression by striking an emotional chord on those who see, hear, touch or interact with the site. A design component that contains a political or moral message that will have meaning for future generations. Individual and group submissions are welcomed. There will be two stages in the selection process:  Stage-One submission requirements are minimal. It should include a minimum one-page summary of ideas, and could include an accompanying sketch or other supporting materials. Submissions will be displayed in the Student Union Building for public viewing and comments prior to  December 6th, 2005. An adjudicating committee will consider comments. Submissions will be short listed to three finalists.   Deadline for Stage-One submissions is on or before November 25th, 2005, 4:30pm. Submissions are to be made to the attention of David Grigg at Campus and Community Planning, 2210 West Mall, UBC.  Email: [email protected] Queries may be directed to David Grigg at 604-822-0472.   Stage-Two will require an expansion of the three finalist’s ideas that take into account affordability, adaptability to an indoor or outdoor social space, and acceptability within the precincts of Applied and Pure Science. All three factors will be given equal rating. The adjudicating committee will then rank the finalists, and the winner(s) announced January 2006. The winner will receive $750 and the two finalists $250. The finalist(s) will also be welcomed to participate in the planning and implementation of the design. Winning submissions will become the property of the Alma Mater Society. 3 Do the Dip this January!:  Do the Dip this January! The UBC Red Cross Club is presenting their first ever Polar Bear Dip on January 19th, 2006 at Wreck Beach! The dip will take place from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Why dip? The proceeds of this Polar Bear Dip go to helping people affected by the severe drought in the Sahel Region of South Africa, where over ten million people are on the brink of starvation. The cost to participate is $10 per participant, but a team of 5 can enter at a cost of $9 per person. Have cold feet – or maybe some of your other body parts? It’s okay! Come in costume to win fantastic prizes, either as a team or individually! Stay tuned for details!
