Sean Randolph, President & CEO, Bay Area Economic Forum Entrepreneurship in Polymers & Technology:  Entrepreneurship in Polymers & Technology Details Around Taping Presentations Presentations were taped at the San Francisco meeting in an effort to reach a broader audience It is available to POLY division members of the ACS as an on-demand Web cast.  Speaker permission was required to video-tape (only 4 of 30 declined) If speakers authorized the POLY division to post their presentation, they were asked to complete a speaker release form. Speakers were asked to upload their presentations 24 hours prior to presenting via the internet or in the Speaker Ready Room. Web cast Communication to POLY Members & Presenters:  Web cast Communication to POLY Members & Presenters Presentations from POLY’s “Presidential Event - Entrepreneurship in Polymers and Technology” were available 3 weeks after meeting. Presentations can be viewed by going through a link on the POLY website http://www.polyacs.org, or you can go directly to the presentations from the following link http://www.chemistry.org/portal/a/c/s/1/poly_div.html?DOC=%5cSubportals%5cpolymer%5cpoly06presentations.html. ACS membership, POLY membership, and registration on Chemistry.org are required for access. The symposium co-chairs, symposium presenters, and the ACS worked collaboratively to make this possible. This is another way that POLY is looking at using technology and the POLY website to disseminate information more broadly to members. POLY Symposium Online: Division Member Response to Survey:  POLY Symposium Online: Division Member Response to Survey Member response to the concept was overwhelmingly positive. Many appreciated the opportunity, and indicated that they would look for it in the future. Some members reported that access hurdles caused frustration. POLY Symposium Online: Division Member Feedback Sampling:  POLY Symposium Online: Division Member Feedback Sampling I did visit the website and see Entrepreneurship in Polymers and Technology presentations. I believe this is a very effective and simple approach to provide information to those  members who were not able to attend all presentations. . . I was impressed by that. I hope you will expand this to cover other symposiums as well and continue doing this in the future. Great job. -Dejan Andjelkovic   The online offering of the symposium is informative, encouraging and practical. It should be done in the future! -Daniel Chang This is a very useful tool when someone missed the presentations or want to remind it again. . . Thank you for such offerings. -Sangyeul Hwang Key Findings from Symposium Web Cast:  Key Findings from Symposium Web Cast The symposium topic needs to have broad appeal to ACS membership Need to have a critical mass of presenters agree to by taped. We are delighted to report that most presenters agreed, i.e., academic and industrial. The thought of being taped may have inspired people to put more time into preparing presentations. The presentations were all excellent! It was very simple to upload presentations Recommend doing on site and having presenters come early It is an easy way to reach more members and take advantage of quality programs Next Steps Regarding Web Cast and Entrepreneurship Symposium:  Next Steps Regarding Web Cast and Entrepreneurship Symposium Based on feedback, the web cast clearly appears to be of value to membership – need to determine most effective use of web-casts Work with ACS to determine cost of web casts – taping and hosting the presentations on a web site Recommend ACS consider incentives for Divisions and Symposium organizers to web cast symposia, particularly on multi-disciplinary and emerging areas. Continue to look for topics to engage students – POLY is working with students regarding a student affiliate chapter. I have proposed a joint ACS-AICHE symposium along the lines of “Entrepreneurship in the Chemical Industry”  for New Orleans, April 2008, and this would again be web-cast POLY is considering running the entrepreneurship symposium every two years and collaborating with different divisions and organizations external to the ACS to bring a flavor local and relevant to the venue to each symposia.
