INTRODUCTION: INTRODUCTION Slide3: Social Media is the interaction among people in which they create share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communication . What Is Social Media??? Slide4: Internet is a very important element of life which cannot be ignored. Internet is used for educational purpose by a large community but unfortunately we have a large community including majority of youth and teenagers who use Internet for only social networking sites. The phenomena of social network is quite simple to understand, it is a web based facility which allows individuals to build a profile identity and generate subjective associations and connections among themselves and communicate. Slide5: The social network websites grab attention of the students and then diverts it towards non-educational and inappropriate actions including useless chatting. On the basis of the above statement we can say that social networking sites may badly affect the academic life and learning experiences of the student. Slide6: OBJECTIVE OF STUDY : To explore the tendency of using social media by the students at FJMU To explore the awareness regarding danger and evils of social media METHODOLOGY: METHODOLOGY Slide8: METHODOLOGY : In this cross sectional study survey method was applied. A structured questioner was developed after the review of latest studies on this subject . Questioner was pre tested to check the understanding ability of respondents. The copies of questioner were distributed to the MBBS classes of 2 nd year and final year of FJMU, Lahore. The data was analysed by using the latest version of SPSS programme RESULTS: RESULTS Slide11: RESULTS The questioner was given to 600 students. Three hundred of 2 nd year and three hundred of final year MBBS classes at FJMU, Lahore Out of these there were 217 second year students who responded and 198 from final year gave their responses. So there were 415 out of 600 students with a response of 69%. Table-1 shows the usage of social media on daily basis. T here were (190) 46% of the students who reported that they used the social media for study purpose. How ever there were 21% of students were using the social media for the purpose of time killing. The students narrated the wastage of time, security threats, fraud & distractions from study. They also described the hazard of leakage of personal information and misuse of the same (as shown in table – 4). The responses given are shown in table-5 . Almost all students described the beneficial usage for study guidelines and help. They also described the beneficial usage of sharing of knowledge with other students and viewing the medical videos/conferences on various topics of interest. They were also aware of the usage of social media for getting knowledge on recent medical advances and research purposes. They are well aware of the evils and beneficial usage of the social media . The students are being distracted by the social media and they are alarmingly involved in socializing and entertainments.   RECOMMENDATIONS: RECOMMENDATIONS Slide25: Recommendations: The students should be guided and advised to utilize these services more for study purpose and try to avoid the excessive usage for entertainment They should not be distracted from their studies and engage themselves some indoor games for time killing. The students should be encouraged to make study groups for sharing of knowledge and information THANK YOU: THANK YOU
