DIABULIMIA: DIABULIMIA A New Eating Disorder DIABULIMIA WHAT IS IT?: DIABULIMIA WHAT IS IT? Diabulimia is when a person with type 1 diabetes purposefully reduces insulin intake in order to lose weight. The term D iabulimia, an informal term not used in the medical community, comes from combining the terms bulimia and diabetes. A 1994 study on diabetics found that 30 percent of women with type 1 diabetes intentionally restricted their insulin intake in order to lose weight. About 30,000 people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes annually, usually in childhood. DIABULIMIA WHAT CAUSE IT?: DIABULIMIA WHAT CAUSE IT? Like other eating disorders, diabulimia does not have one specific cause. It develops due to The obsession with food can easily turn into disordered eating patterns, which can lead to an eating disorder. Combination of Genetics Psychological & Biological Factor Emotional Issues FOOD –A DIABETICS ENEMY WHEN YOU CROSS THE LIMIT: FOOD –A DIABETICS ENEMY WHEN YOU CROSS THE LIMIT Eating wrong food might send a person into Diabetic Coma. Diabetics have to focus on how much sugar and carbohydrates are in every morsel of food they eat, and the process of picking out food and eating becomes more about sustaining life than seeking pleasure. Restrictive diets make diabetics unable to enjoy some of the same foods as their peers, and they might feel embarrassed or ashamed about their condition. D iabetics are at a high risk of developing depression and anxiety, which are also common co-occurring conditions with eating disorders. DIBULIMIA HOW DOES IT WORK?: DIBULIMIA HOW DOES IT WORK? In Dibulimia, the body is dependent upon insulin to metabolize food into sugar, which cells need for energy. Without insulin, sugar remains in the bloodstream, and is urinated out & it requires a lot of Water for the kidneys to process all the sugar for removal from the body. This is why diabetics not on insulin are often very thirsty and dehydrated, as well as urinate frequently. Diabetics quickly recognize that they can easily and rapidly lose weight by manipulating their insulin levels. DIBULIMIA WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES?: DIBULIMIA WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES? Dibulimia combines two medical conditions: an eating disorder & Diabetics. Diabetes, even when well managed, has many health complications associated with it, including-: DIBULIMIA WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?: DIBULIMIA WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? DIBULIMIA HOW IT CAN BE TREATED?: For successful treatment of diabulimia, it is really important to have staff who are familiar with treating eating disorders and diabetes. Eating disorder treatments concentrate on teaching patients to not focus so much on watching calorie and sugar consumption and otherwise monitoring their food consumption. They might experience swelling of the legs that could scare them and make them not want to continue their insulin. They might experience health problems when not managing their insulin, when they start retaking it, they might feel worse. This is just the body readjusting to the insulin and it is important that they maintain it. DIBULIMIA HOW IT CAN BE TREATED? DIBULIMIA THE TREATMENT PLANS: A person with diabulimia can learn to overcome the disorder and regain control over life—and his or her diabetes. Treatment of diabulimia should reflect a series of stages. First, the diabetes must be managed, along with any other health complications caused by the eating disorder Secondly, the person needs to have a psychological assessment to screen for any underlying and co-occurring mental health conditions. A treatment plan should be created that includes diabetes management and help for any mental and psychological problems.
