Steps in Social Research : Steps in Social Research PANKAJ K DAS Assistant Professor YASHWANTRAO CHAVAN SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK, STARA [email protected] 1 7/9/2014 PowerPoint Presentation: 2 7/9/2014 So you have decided to do Research ? Do you know? Research is an Academic activity. Research involves scientific procedures. Research has its own method, which you are going to learn now. Before conducting Research, you must qualify for doing Research- You must absorb the qualities of a Researcher. What are the Qualities of a Researcher ? PowerPoint Presentation: 3 7/9/2014 QUALITIES OF A GOOD RESEARCHER In Social Science including Social Work, most of the time research is done for vulnerable and oppressed groups. Therefore it is very important that you have a sense of respect for them. Learn to Respect People (subjects). Free yourself from biasness . Be a good reader . Read lot of relevant literature related to your research interest topic. Have a good understanding of Research Methodology. Question everything, reason everything, but do not impose your ideas. Accept and present the fact as it is . Do not copy or manipulate. Discuss your project with learned people from the same field. PowerPoint Presentation: 4 7/9/2014 STEPS IN SOCIAL RESEARCH PowerPoint Presentation: 5 7/9/2014 Step 1 Casual Observation of the Phenomenon/Event For selecting a Research Problem Select a topic which is appropriate for scientific inquiry. It is not difficult, the social world around us is full of unanswered questions. Creative observation is necessary to select a problem. (Do problem tree analysis) Read different newspapers daily, it will sharpen your observation skill. Since you are a Social Worker, think whether situation can be changed by using Social Work method. Do not arrive at your own conclusion. Repeatedly evaluate your observation. PowerPoint Presentation: 6 7/9/2014 Step 2 DEFINING THE RESEARCH PROBLEM Once the research problem is identified, define the Research topic . Your topic should be clearly understood by others. Impact of adherence counselling on People living with HIV/AIDS; Study with reference to Satara ART centre Impact of 12 days Hearth nutrition programme on malnourished children in selected anganwadi centers in Satara city Role of industrial counselling in preventing absenteeism among blue collar workers: Study with reference to Lee Cooper, Satara PowerPoint Presentation: 7 7/9/2014 Step 3 REVIEW OF LITRATURE ROL is next level of planning in a research project. Some literature talks about origin of the problem, some are concerned with effects and consequences of the problem. Other deal with impact of social programmes . Gather relevant findings. Summaries them in such a way that others may find it easy and interesting to read. Read plenty of published research articles. Make it condensed and relate it with research questions. PowerPoint Presentation: 8 7/9/2014 Step 4 IDENTIFICATION OF THE OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY Once the problem and the theoretical background of the problem is prepared, its time to address the aims and objectives of the study. Make it short and clear. PowerPoint Presentation: 9 7/9/2014 Step 5 FORMULATION OF HYPOTHESIS Research Strategy is to move from a general research theory to a specific research problem. (Known to unknown) Hypothesis state what we expect to find rather than what has already known. H1(Working Hypothesis ) “Broken homes lead to juvenile delinquency”. Ho(Null Hypothesis) “There is no relationship between broken home and juvenile delinquency”. PowerPoint Presentation: 10 7/9/2014 Step 6 CHOOSING APPROPRIATE RESEARCH DESIGN Research Designs are of many type. Qualitative, Quantitative Descriptive, Explanatory, Exploratory Intervention Research Action research Single subject design research You must select one and combined research design for your research. PowerPoint Presentation: 11 7/9/2014 Step 7 SELECTING UNIVERSE(POPULATION) FOR THE STUDY Topic: “Impact of 12 days Hearth nutrition programme on malnourished children in selected anganwadi centers in Satara city ” Universe/Population= All the subjects who will take part in the study For the above mentioned topic, universe will be all the malnourished children attending aanganwadi centres in Satara city. PowerPoint Presentation: 12 7/9/2014 Step 8 SELECTING UNIVERSE(POPULATION) FOR THE STUDY Topic: “Impact of 12 days Hearth nutrition programme on malnourished children in selected anganwadi centers in Satara city ” Universe/Population= All the subjects who will take part in the study For the above mentioned topic, universe will be all the malnourished children attending aanganwadi centres in Satara city. PowerPoint Presentation: 13 7/9/2014 Step 9 SAMPLE AND SAMPLING Sample= Representative of the Universe Sampling=Method of selecting sample There are two types of sampling method: Probability sampling, Non Probability sampling Selection of sample depends on many factors The homogeneity or heterogeneity of the sample is one factor. Sampling plans may be very simple or complex. Select a representative sample. PowerPoint Presentation: 14 7/9/2014 Step 11 DATA PROCESSING Raw data needs to organized, coded for analysis. If it is qualitative study, code book needs to be prepared. Check all the questionnaire and interview schedule . Use software like SPSS(Statistical Package fro Social Sciences) for data processing. PowerPoint Presentation: 15 7/9/2014 Step 12 DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION Plan how you will analyze the data. Plan what kind of statistical tests you will perform. Plan how you are going to compare the variables. PowerPoint Presentation: 16 7/9/2014 Step 13 HYPOTHESIS TESTING Based on the findings you need to test the hypothesis using statistical formulas. PowerPoint Presentation: 17 7/9/2014 Step 14 PRESENTING THE RESULTS Now, its time to present the findings . Present it in the light of objectives. Present all the findings (factual information) as it is. PowerPoint Presentation: 18 7/9/2014 Step 15 REPORT WRITING Your research project is almost complete . Present your entire research under following heads: Chapter 1: Introduction: Background information Chapter 2: Review of literature Chapter 3: Research Methodology Chapter 4: Data Analysis and interpretation Chapter 5: Findings and Conclusions, Suggestions Bibliography Appendix CONGRATULATIONS !
