PowerPoint Presentation: Technology In Education: Utopian Or Dystopian? A Digital Artefact By Rajiv Bajaj For # edcmooc PowerPoint Presentation: Since times immemorial… PowerPoint Presentation: We humans have been evolving… PowerPoint Presentation: And as we evolve, our thirst for knowledge increases. PowerPoint Presentation: We try to learn from all available sources. PowerPoint Presentation: From our history & legacies… PowerPoint Presentation: From our scriptures… PowerPoint Presentation: From other cultures and religions… PowerPoint Presentation: From books and from research… PowerPoint Presentation: We absorb knowledge like sponges… PowerPoint Presentation: We make progress and we develop technologies that help improve our quality of life. PowerPoint Presentation: Technologies that assist in, and greatly enhance and improve our learning experiences. PowerPoint Presentation: The face of education itself has been changing over the years. PowerPoint Presentation: Technology is increasingly shaping and guiding our learning. PowerPoint Presentation: Education itself is Evolving ! PowerPoint Presentation: The Digital Re volution Has… PowerPoint Presentation: Re vamped PowerPoint Presentation: Re juvenated PowerPoint Presentation: Re charged PowerPoint Presentation: Re fined PowerPoint Presentation: Re freshed PowerPoint Presentation: Re vitalized PowerPoint Presentation: Re organised PowerPoint Presentation: Re defined PowerPoint Presentation: Education As We Know It Today PowerPoint Presentation: A Digitally Connected World PowerPoint Presentation: Has Created A Global Classroom! PowerPoint Presentation: And What Makes This Possible ? PowerPoint Presentation: Technology PowerPoint Presentation: The Engine That Powers… PowerPoint Presentation: Most Education Today ! PowerPoint Presentation: From normal classroom aids … PowerPoint Presentation: To Virtual Reality… PowerPoint Presentation: To Online Learning PowerPoint Presentation: Technology is enriching & enhancing our learning experience. PowerPoint Presentation: This is MY PERCEPTION of technology in education. PowerPoint Presentation: Viewpoints differ on this issue. PowerPoint Presentation: The Utopian & Dystopian Viewpoints PowerPoint Presentation: Utopian - A positive, hopeful, futuristic & idealistic view of technology. PowerPoint Presentation: An instrumental view of technology: Technology is a product of humans in the service of humans. PowerPoint Presentation: It may be used for good or ill. It is able to be mastered. PowerPoint Presentation: Technology can solve problems, even problems that technology creates. PowerPoint Presentation: Resultantly, problems are solved by increasing complexity and increasing order. PowerPoint Presentation: Progress is an essentially good thing and progress requires order. PowerPoint Presentation: Dystopian - A Negative, Despairing & Fearful View of Technology. PowerPoint Presentation: Technological Innovation is always resisted. PowerPoint Presentation:  Fear of technology in the workplace. Fear of replacement. PowerPoint Presentation:  Technology changes behaviour and patterns of behaviour . PowerPoint Presentation:  As instrumental technology is unable to be mastered people become more “objects” to be “ordered”. PowerPoint Presentation:  And MY view on this PowerPoint Presentation:  The battle between Utopia and Dystopia has been raging for centuries… PowerPoint Presentation: Neither side winning or losing. PowerPoint Presentation: Symbolizes the age-old co-existence of opposites. PowerPoint Presentation: Like the good co-existing with the bad. PowerPoint Presentation: Truth With Untruths. PowerPoint Presentation: Two sides of the same coin. PowerPoint Presentation: A spinning coin, perhaps, that keeps changing the side that it presents to us ? PowerPoint Presentation: Our attitude towards technology is a matter of our perception. PowerPoint Presentation: Our perceptions shape and define us. PowerPoint Presentation: Our perceptions also dictate our actions. PowerPoint Presentation: How we perceive something is based on our past experiences. PowerPoint Presentation: We tend to view everything through our “mental filters”. PowerPoint Presentation: No two living beings have identical mental filters . PowerPoint Presentation: We are all unique and our experiences in life are different. PowerPoint Presentation: These filters are made up of Beliefs, Assumptions, Values, Ideas, Expectations & Personal history. Beliefs & Ideas PowerPoint Presentation: Utopia and Dystopia, in my view, are nothing but two conflicting perceptions… PowerPoint Presentation: … a product of our perceptions, sieved through our mental filters. PowerPoint Presentation: One man’s utopia may be another man’s dystopia. PowerPoint Presentation: Depends on which side of the coin is visible to us… PowerPoint Presentation: A coin that will always keep spinning… PowerPoint Presentation: Which side of the coin are YOU looking at ? PowerPoint Presentation: And a very special message of thanks goes to: The Fantastic Five - The teachers of EDCMOOC at University of Edinburgh who made this a wonderful learning experience. Ary & Maddie for their support , guidance and encouragement. Monica & Dimitra – my PLN pals for their ideas and support. AND last but not the least to Heikke Hallantie for sharing so many of my blog-posts on Education Daily.
