FINA INITIATIVES SINCE 1996 FOR THE BENEFIT OF WATER POLO The inclusion of the Women’s Water Polo competition on the Olympic Programme The creation of the Men’s & Women’s Water Polo World League The FINA Schools for Water Polo Referees The new Water Polo Rules approved by the Congress in 2005 The establishment of a group of experts to analyse the new Water Polo rules Slide5:  Men & Women 2007 - 2008 - 2009 FINA Water Polo World League Meeting Budapest - 16 June 2006 FINA Water Polo World League 2007-9:  FINA Water Polo World League 2007-9 Concept 3 year edition – 2007, 2008, 2009 An original competition Consistent annual format Attractive prize money Professional organisation Central TV rights marketing and distribution Administered by FINA and the World League Council FINA Water Polo World League 2007-9:  FINA Water Polo World League 2007-9 Objectives Increase the image of Water Polo world-wide Establish a strong, recognised product Create a product for TV Attract TV coverage and audiences Raise interest of partners Attract spectators to the matches Competition Formula:  Competition Formula Group Stage 4 groups of 4 teams, playing each other on a home and away basis Matches played annually May - June 2 matches over 2 days on 1 weekend Total 96 matches – 12 matches per team Each team plays 2x 3 away and 2x 3 home matches Scoring 3 points for a win 1 point for a loss In the event of a tie at the end of the Group stage, the teams will be classified according to FINA BL 8.6 Competition Formula:  Competition Formula Super Final 6 teams Qualification 4 Group winners* Host nation FINA wild-card * If the Host nation is a Group winner, then the 2nd placed team in that Group will qualify as well June – dates to be confirmed Competition Organisation:  Competition Organisation Game duration 4 periods of 8 minutes each 3 minute break between periods 1-2 and 3-4 5 minute break at half-time Points system Win 3 points awarded Loss 1 point awarded NF Income:  NF Income Exploitation of national marketing rights National team sponsorship Domestic TV rights Admission / Ticketing Match Programmes Food & beverage sales Contributions from public institutions NF Expenditure:  NF Expenditure Own travel & accommodation Accommodation for visiting teams FINA delegates accommodation Promotion & publicity Medical expenses Security Ticketing operations Staff and officials costs Venue hire, equipment costs Venue decoration & sponsor signage Local transportation for visiting teams FINA Income:  FINA Income International TV rights Title Partner rights Official World League Ball FINA Expenses:  FINA Expenses Administration: World League Secretariat Travel costs World League Delegate Neutral referees Per diems World League Delegate Neutral officials Medical Insurance for all Teams TV Broadcasting:  TV Broadcasting TV production must be provided by each host team in accordance with the FINA TV Guidelines Minimum level of TV production Minimum number of cameras Graphics package Programme format and running order Provision of commentary positions and bookings for other TV rightsholders Marketing:  Marketing Group Matches FINA may appoint a Title Partner for the World League series NF may apoint local sponsors and suppliers for its home matches Super Final FINA World League Title Partner Other Marketing rights to be exploited by FINA and the NF as agreed TV Broadcast Rights:  TV Broadcast Rights FINA & NF will jointly negotiate domestic broadcast rights to ensure the highest possible production standards All income from domestic rights will be retained by the NF All international TV rights will be marketed centrally by FINA through its agent 3. FINA SCHOOLS FOR WATER POLO REFEREES - OBJECTIVES:  3. FINA SCHOOLS FOR WATER POLO REFEREES - OBJECTIVES To enlarge the number of referees and enhance the quality of existing referees To create a uniform pattern for the interpretation and application of the Water Polo rules To use the schools as an instrument to develop and promote Water Polo worldwide. To be on FINA Water Polo Referees List to attend an edition of the FINA Water Polo School Referees to have an update every two years 4. PROGRAMS TO PROMOTE AND DEVELOP WATER POLO WORLDWIDE :  4. PROGRAMS TO PROMOTE AND DEVELOP WATER POLO WORLDWIDE To establish a four years programme Coaches and technical support for 2 or 3 months and will be repeated annually Continue the conduct of the FINA Men’s and Women’s World Leagues 5. CALENDAR:  5. CALENDAR To development a coherent Water Polo international calendar To establish a reasonable National competition program together with the National Federations The calendar to be created with the cooperation of the National Federations and Continental Associations Conclusion:  Conclusion Let’s work together for a better Water Polo Game!
