Slide 1: What Time Is It? Slide 2: What time is it? 10:25 Slide 3: What time is it? 7:45 Slide 4: What time is it? 5:30 Slide 5: What time is it? 3:55 Slide 6: What time is it? 1:30 Slide 7: What time is it? 9:15 Slide 8: What time is it? It is half past ten or 10:30 in the morning. It is a quarter past twelve or 12:15 in the afternoon. It is forty-five minutes after nine or quarter of ten in the evening. Slide 9: It is 25 minutes past four or 4:25 in the afternoon. It is 55 minutes after seven or five of eight in the morning. It is 10 minutes past six or 6:10 in the evening. It is 28 minutes past two or 2:28 in the afternoon. Slide 10: What time is it? Slide 15: Elapsed Time Elapsed time is the amount of time that has passed. Slide 16: It is 8:15 a.m. Sam will sleep 2 hours and 15 minutes longer. When will Sam wake up? To find this answer which operation do you need to use? + What word clues help you know you need to add? "minutes longer" Slide 17: First add the hours. 8:15 a.m. + 1 hour = 9:15 a.m. 9:15 a.m. + 1 hour = 10:15 a.m. Next, add the minutes. 10:15 a.m. + 15 minutes = 10:30 a.m. Slide 18: Your Turn! It is 8:30 p.m. Myeshia will talk on the phone for 3 hours and 50 minutes longer. What time will she get off the phone? Slide 19: What operation did you use and how did you know to use that operation? Addition, because of the words "minutes longer". Slide 20: What did you add first? The hours are added first. 8:30 p.m. + 1 hour = 9:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m. + 1 hour = 10:30 p.m. 10:30 p.m. + 1 hour = 11:30 p.m. Slide 21: What did you add next? The minutes are added next. Do you notice something different about this problem? If you add 50 minutes to 11:30 p.m. you will go past 12:00 a.m. Slide 22: What should you have done now? From 11:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. 30 minutes passed. You still have 20 minutes left to find. 12:00 a.m. + 20 mintues = 12:20 a.m. Slide 23: Why is your answer a.m. instead of p.m.? At midnight the time switches from p.m. to a.m. Slide 24: Lets Try Another One! It is 11:15 p.m. Hansel ate 1 hour and 15 minutes ago. What time did he eat? Slide 25: What operation did you use and how did you know to use that operation? Subtraction, because of the words "minutes ago". Slide 26: What did you subtract first? The hours are subtracted first. 11:15 p.m. - 1 hour = 10:15 p.m. Slide 27: What did you subtract next? The minutes are subtracted next. 10:15 p.m. - 15 minutes = 10:00 p.m. Slide 28: Lets Try Another One! It is 9:30 a.m. The three bears went for a walk 2 hours and 50 minutes ago. What time did they leave for their walk? Slide 29: What operation did you use and how did you know to use that operation? Subtraction, because of the words "minutes ago". Slide 30: What did you subtract first? The hours are subtracted first. 9:30 a.m. - 1 hour = 8:30 a.m. 8:30 a.m. - 1 hour = 7:30 a.m. Slide 31: What did you subtract next? The minutes are subtracted next. Do you notice something different about this problem? If you subtract 50 minutes from 7:30 a.m. you will go before 7:00 a.m. Slide 32: What should you have done now? From 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. 30 minutes passed. You still have 20 minutes left to find. 7:00 a.m. - 20 mintues = 6:40 a.m. Slide 33: I Challenge You! Slide 34: Sam runs 1 mile in 20 minutes. How much time would elapse if Sam ran 3 miles? Slide 35: What operation did you use and how did you know to use that operation? Repeated addition or multiplication, because I was finding out how many miles altogether. Slide 36: How did you solve the problem? Repeated Addition 20 + 20 + 20 = 60 minutes 60 minutes = 1 hour Multiplication 20 x 3 = 60 minutes 60 minutes = 1 hour
