3. Benefits of IXPs • Reduce Transit Costs • Better control of routing • Traffic stays local • Does not become subject to foreign policy • Improve end-user experience • Lower Latency • Less jitter for real-time traffic (voice and video)

4. Canadian IXP Landscape – Past • Historically Canada had only 2 public peering points (IXPs): o Toronto Internet Exchange - Canada’s largest IXP - Founded in the late 90’s - 194 peers on over 300 peering ports o Ottawa Internet Exchange - Founded in 2000 - Relatively small

5. Need for #Change • Only 2 IXPs in Canada was NOT Acceptable • We were behind other countries in the world like: – Cambodia (3) – Phillipines (5) – Poland (12) – Singapore (3) – And many other larger (and smaller) countries •

6. Canadian Landscape Today • We still have the first 2 IXPs – Toronto Internet Exchange (TorIX) • Still the largest, approaching 200 Gbps at peak – Ottawa Internet Exchange (OttIX) • New IXPs have come to life: – Vancouver Internet Exchange (VanIX) – Manitoba Internet Exchange (MBIX)
