Are there any questions that came up from the last time we met or concerns you would like addressed today? More on Job Search Tools:  More on Job Search Tools Employment Applications Completing an Application Letters of Recommendation Performance Evaluations Personal Data Sheet References Employment Applications:  Employment Applications Visual Impact It is a good idea to make a copy of the application in case you make a mistake Print clearly in black ink and do not use abbreviations Use not applicable (N/A) if the section does not apply to you Follow Directions Read the entire application before you complete it Be Positive Present an honest, positive picture of yourself Employment Applications (Continued):  Employment Applications (Continued) Be Honest You must be truthful on an application Target Your Qualifications Carefully select what you will include on an application Select items that will support your qualifications for the specific position Position Desired Enter the job title for the position you are applying in the blank space provided Employment Applications (continued) :  Employment Applications (continued) Job Gaps Make your answers short, simple, and truthful regarding any gaps in employment Some examples Managing and maintaining a household Attending School Providing child care Be sure to include any volunteer work with the organization’s name and the type of work done Salary Requirements Either give a range or respond “negotiable” Employment Applications (continued):  Employment Applications (continued) Reasons for Leaving Fired Do not use the terms “fired” or “terminated.” Find a phrase that sounds neutral such as “involuntary separation.” You may want to call past employers to find out what they will say in response to reference checks Quit Be prepared to offer an explanation Avoid saying anything negative about your previous employer Possible responses: Leaving for advancement potential, to work closer to home, for a better work environment, or for a career change If you quit to move to another area—be careful not to use this as a reason for more than one employer on your application If you quit to attend school, make sure this agrees with the education you listed on your resume and job application Laid Off Phrases to use: Lack of work Lack of operating funds Temporary employment Completing Applications:  Completing Applications Letters of Recommendation Be sure to get them from previous employers, teachers/professors, and superiors They need to address how long they have known you, the quality of your work or participation, dedication, skills, and work habits It is a good idea to write your own reference letter as a guide for your supervisor that includes accomplishments and or attributes you would like them to include in their letter. The employment office also carries “pocket Resumes” that can be used like a personal data sheet. Preparing for a Job Interview:  Preparing for a Job Interview Know as much about the job and organization as possible Supplemental questions and the job announcement may be helpful Surf any websites pertaining to the organization and or field for which you are interviewing Know About the Interview Process:  Know About the Interview Process Talk about the interview process with the person who schedules you for the interview Who will you be interviewing with (one person or a panel) The length of time to plan to be there Directions, address, and phone number Parking location If you can/should bring anything with you besides your resume Know About the Interview Process:  Know About the Interview Process Take a pen/paper to write down notes for yourself. Make a list of questions to ask interviewer(s). Get business cards from interviewer(s) or receptionist so you have the correct spelling of names when writing Thank you notes. Research Questions:  Research Questions Questions to ask the person scheduling the interview or to obtain information on before meeting with the organization If you need an accommodation due to a disability, let them know of your need Ask for a written job description. This will be very helpful when trying to identify specific skills. Ask a current employee what personality traits are most useful when working for this organization. Who are the customers/clients of this organization? What services/products are offered to the customers/clients? What is the management philosophy? Ask for a copy or where to find the mission statement, vision, values, and Strategic Plan. Dressing for the Interview:  Dressing for the Interview Appearance should be neat, clean, and conservative Dress a step above what the best employee for that job would wear Avoid excessive jewelry, perfumes, and colognes Stay away from “fads” in clothing and shoes Look the part Make a Good Personal Appearance:  Make a Good Personal Appearance Get a good night’s sleep Take a shower Shave Brush your teeth Use a mouthwash (may want to take mints) Comb your hair Wear clean and pressed clothes Wear proper clothes for the job Clean and shine your shoes Avoid smoking before the interview Potential Interview Questions and Suggested Responses:  Potential Interview Questions and Suggested Responses Tell us/me something about yourself. Briefly describe your experience and background. If you are unsure what information the interviewer is seeking say, “Are there any areas in particular you’d like to know about me.” What is your weakest point? Mention something that is actually a strength: “I’m something of a perfectionist.” “I’m a stickler for punctuality.” “I’m tenacious.” Potential Interview Questions (continued):  Potential Interview Questions (continued) What is your strongest point? “I work well under pressure.” “I organize and manage my time well.” “I am eager to learn and don’t have to unlearn old techniques.” Give a specific example to illustrate your point. What do you hope to be doing five years from now? “I hope I will still be working here and have increased my level of responsibility based on my performance and abilities. Why have you been out of work so long? “I spent some time re-evaluating my past experiences and the current job market to see what direction I wanted to take.” Potential Interview Questions (continued):  Potential Interview Questions (continued) What do you know about our organization? This is where your research comes in handy. Why do you want to work here? What is your greatest accomplishment? Give a specific illustration from your previous or current job where you saved money, started a new program, created a new system, etc. Why should we hire you? Highlight your background based on the organization’s needs. Recap your qualifications. Potential Interview Questions (continued):  Potential Interview Questions (continued) Tell me about a problem you had in your last job and how you resolved it. Site a specific problem that highlights your problem solving skills and focus on a strengths based approach. Provide us with an example of your leaderships skills. Use an example that highlights your ability to manage conflict, motivate others, use teamwork, and achieve results. Potential Interview Questions (continued):  Potential Interview Questions (continued) Have you ever dealt with a difficult boss/co-worker/client and how did you respond? Use an example that highlights your ability to address issues, achieve resolution at the lowest level, shows empathy, and demonstrates your knowledge of resources available when attempts at resolution do not work. What does diversity mean to you? Tell us about an experience you have had in working with persons of differing ethnic or cultural backgrounds. What did you learn from this experience, and how have you applied what you learned? Discuss diversity from it’s broadest definition and site specific experiences that demonstrate your ability to use diversity as a strength. Tips for Answering Questions:  Tips for Answering Questions When you sit in a chair, sit upright, do not slouch or lean forward. Establish eye contact with all interviewers members, not just the person asking you the question. Remember delivery is important. Use gestures, expression and avoid monotone delivery. Don’t memorize your answers. Think conceptually. Tips for Answering Questions (continued):  Tips for Answering Questions (continued) Don’t try to bluff the interviewer(s). Be frank and answer truthfully. Be clear and concise in your answers. Maintain your focus. Answer the question asked. Be yourself. Be prepared for follow-up questions. Show initiative in your responses. Don’t be afraid to use appropriate humor. Questions to Ask:  Questions to Ask Be sure to have a few carefully prepared questions to ask the interviewer(s): What qualities would the ideal candidate possess to do this job? What is the future direction/focus of your organization? What are your organization’s current challenges? What is the immediate priority for the person in this position? Questions to Ask (continued):  Questions to Ask (continued) What goals would you like to accomplish in the next 6 months? Could you give me a more detailed job description? Why is this position open? Are there opportunities for advancement? To whom would I report? Common Interview Mistakes:  Common Interview Mistakes Assuming the interviewer(s) know you and have read your resume so you don’t answer the questions fully. Giving answers that are too brief. Rambling responses that answer the questions eventually, but are not clear and concise. Answering mechanically as if the answer offered is rote. Not asking questions when given an opportunity to do so. Be sure to thank ALL interviewers whether it is via phone, note or email. Following Up:  Following Up Thank you letters and notes Saying thank you in your job search is not only the right thing to do is is also and effective job search strategy A thank you letter provides an opportunity to sell your skills once again and to leave a positive impression with the organization May be done in person, by phone, in a formal note or informal note Should be sent at a minimum for all interviews Should be brief and to the point Should be done no later than 24 hours after the interview Follow up with the organization 1-2 weeks after the interview to check the status on the job How to Prepare for Next Week’s Workshop:  How to Prepare for Next Week’s Workshop Continue work on your resumes Practice interview skills with a friend Talk to current contacts about letters of reference and recommendation Prepare a list of questions for the Unemployment Office Take good care of yourself physically and mentally
