YESTERDAYS : YESTERDAYS By: Linda J. Slide 3: Days were long and hard, with field work and other things to do, each of us had chores, I was the youngest, so mine were very few. Slide 4: My Momma seldom got up early, she would to milk our cow and I drank warm milk as she did; Daddy would be in the fields picking cotton. Slide 5: I dressed to play, I did not wear my shoes in the summer, and as I ran out the door, I would grab a cold biscuit, my chores were forgotten. I ran through the fields trying to catch butterflies, at twilight I tried to catch fireflies; I also liked to wade the creek looking for violets on its banks. : I ran through the fields trying to catch butterflies, at twilight I tried to catch fireflies; I also liked to wade the creek looking for violets on its banks. I took my Daddy jugs of water, handed him a gourd dipper to use to quench his thirst, then I would jump on his cotton-sack and ride, for thanks. : I took my Daddy jugs of water, handed him a gourd dipper to use to quench his thirst, then I would jump on his cotton-sack and ride, for thanks. I ran on our paths riding my stick pony, fluttering up dust, I climbed trees, and I loved playing in the barn and jumping on the hay. : I ran on our paths riding my stick pony, fluttering up dust, I climbed trees, and I loved playing in the barn and jumping on the hay. Sometimes I had to churn the milk, I hated to sit that long, my hands pushed the dasher up and down; on the churn I would put my feet. : Sometimes I had to churn the milk, I hated to sit that long, my hands pushed the dasher up and down; on the churn I would put my feet. We needed the butter; I loved it on hot biscuits with molasses, when we had extra milk and cream, Daddy made us ice cream for a treat. : We needed the butter; I loved it on hot biscuits with molasses, when we had extra milk and cream, Daddy made us ice cream for a treat. Slide 12: Momma cooked on a wood stove, all was very good; at times we would bake potatoes in the fireplace, we popped popcorn there too. Slide 13: At night we used coal oil lamps for light, my sister and I would play games, our parents would read and discuss what next to do. Slide 14: We rode to town in our wagon, I felt very small in the big General Store, I wished for things that I could not have, but that's what children do. Slide 15: Often Momma got flower seeds, always snuff, Daddy got farm tools and chewing tobacco, most of the time I got a piece of candy, maybe bubble gum too. Slide 16: I had dolls to play with, tea sets too, Momma made me pretty dresses out of flour sacks and some she made with store cloth, she added fancy lace to them too. Slide 17: At harvest time peanuts were pulled up to dry, potatoes were put in the cellar, and Momma canned things for later; food was saved, some sold, there was much to do. Slide 18: I loved the country, we had no electricity, no car or radio, we drank water from a well, took baths in a big tin tub, used outhouses, that is what country people had to do. Slide 19: Lying in bed I would look at my walls, they were covered with old newspapers, and as I looked at the pictures, I hoped that someday, I could read my wallpaper too. ByLinda J.
